Robert Stolt Obituary

Robert J. Stolt
1943 - 2018
AUGUSTA - Robert J. Stolt, 74, of Chesterville, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side, Friday, June 8, 2018, at Maine Medical Center, after a year-long battle with cancer.
Bob was born Oct. 16, 1943, in Skowhegan, the son of Randolph and Ethelle (Gillis) Stolt.
Bob grew up in Madison, graduating from Madison High School in 1962. Bob was an outstanding athlete at Madison High School, and then went on to the University of Maine, where he was a defensive end on the football team.
In 1965, the team won the Lambert Trophy as the top team in the East. They won the Yankee Conference Championship and played in the 1965 Tangerine Bowl. Bob graduated in 1966. Following college, he spent the next four years as head football coach at Farmington High School, and Higgins Classical Institute in Charleston.
After coaching, Bob attended the New England School of Law, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the New England Law Review. Following his graduation in 1973, he accepted a position with the state of Maine as an Assistant Attorney General.
During his tenure, Bob was a member of the team which successfully argued the Maine-New Hampshire border dispute before the Unites States Supreme Court.
In 1977, Gov. James Longley asked Bob to serve as a member of his cabinet, and appointed him as Commissioner of Personnel. The group of cabinet members became known as "The Slippery Six", a moniker they wore with pride.
Following this, Gov. Joseph Brennan appointed Bob as Deputy Attorney General, a position he served in until joining the law firm of Lipman and Katz, where he spent the next 37 years.
In 2012, Bob entered retirement by starting his own law practice which he maintained until last year. During his career, Bob authored and published The Trial Handbook for Maine Lawyers, and served as President of the Maine Trial Association. Bob was a well respected member of the bar and was most proud of maintaining a reputation for high ethical standards during his five decades as an attorney.
Bob was an avid reader and enjoyed each and every moment spent at Parker Pond. He loved watching his grandchildren grow and experience new things in life. Birthdays were highly anticipated events, as he was renowned for the giving of the "un-birthday card", which brought great joy to those grandchildren not celebrating their birthday.
He was an integral member of his softball team, Dewey and the Sch'Bags. What they lacked in talent, they made up for with in guile and the best uniforms in the league. Bob was known for his generosity and the best gift he gave to his wife was his love and devotion.
Bob was predeceased by his parents; and his step-father, Everett Christopher.
He is survived by his wife, Bernadette (Bell) Stolt; his sons, David Stolt and his wife, Julie, of Augusta and Richard McAllister, of Chesterville; his sisters, Maryann Witham and her husband, Larry, of Embden, Judith Mateja and her husband, Phil, of Orono and Tina Anzelc and her husband, Rick, of Madison; brothers, Chris Christopher and his wife, Irene, of Madison, Amando Christopher and his wife, Lori, of Madison and Timothy Christopher, of Madison; and three grandchildren, Jordan, Anna, and Robert Stolt.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Augusta on Saturday, June 16, 2018, at 11 a.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Governor Hill Mansion in Augusta immediately following.

Bob was one of the first lawyers I met when I returned to Maine to work for Dexter Shoe Company in 1986. He did legal work for Dexter, and was a friend and mentor for me in my legal career as well. A great guy, my condolences to his wife and family.
