Arthur Bishop Obituary

Arthur P. Bishop, 83
WATERVILLE -- Arthur P. Bishop, 83, formerly of Brunswick, died on Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at the home of Brad, Lynda, Cameron, and Kyle Bishop, where he had resided since February.
Art was born in Saco on Aug. 19, 1926, the son of Arthur and Antoinette (Larose) Bishop. Art attended Saco schools, graduating from Thornton Academy in 1948, after serving his country during World War ll.
Upon graduating from Thornton, Art embarked on what were the greatest four years of his life. Art enrolled at Bowdoin College, graduating in 1952, and the years spent at Bowdoin remain some of the greatest memories of his lifetime. Art spoke fondly of his friends that he made at Bowdoin especially those who played with him on the gridiron and baseball diamond. His football coach was Adam Walsh, the All American Center at Notre Dame who played for Knute Rockne. Equally impressive was baseball Coach Danny McFayden, who played on World Championship teams with Babe Ruth and the New York Yankees in the 1920s. Art was an All-New England selection and Little All- American while playing football, and an All-New England, and State Series Team selection in baseball. He set several records in baseball at Bowdoin that still stand to this day.
After graduation, Art worked in the textile industry traveling the east coast. It was in 1964 that he embarked on his true career as teacher and coach at Brunswick High School. He retired from teaching in 1987, but would always talk about his friendships and recall all the great students and athletes that he knew at Brunswick High.
During retirement, Art spent some of the winter months watching the Red Sox in Florida with friends Edmund and Patricia Gibson.

He also frequented South Bend, Ind. to watch Notre Dame Football games. Art was a 2002 inductee into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame.
Cam and Kyle Bishop had one of the greatest grandfathers of all time. Art could be seen at a football field in Newport, a hockey rink in Bangor, or a baseball field in Bucksport, following his grandsons as they played for Waterville Senior High School. Cam and Kyle will be forever grateful for his support and guidance.
He was predeceased by his parents; and sister, Georgette Bishop Stetson. Art married Rosemary Emerson Bishop in 1951. She died Sept. 29, 1963, at the age of 35. Surviving are his son Brad and wife Lynda (Giroux); and two grandsons who were the pride of his life, Cam, a sophomore at Bowdoin College, and Kyle, a senior at Waterville Senior High School, all from Waterville.
Special thanks to William (Bill) Cockburn for his friendship and many visits to see Art, Lynda's mother, Joanne Lucas Falvo, for her support and never ending array of food, Dr. James Raker and his nursing staff, Lisa and Virginia, Health Reach Hospice in Waterville, and especially his nurse Bertha, whose quick wit and humor was appreciated.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, July 2, from 4-7 p.m., at Stetson's Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick. There will be no funeral services. Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Saco. Memorial condolences may be expressed at stetsonsfuneralhome.com.

Not sure what to say?

Brad,
I just heard about your dad's passing. I am so very sorry and hope that you remember all the love and passion that he always had for you and your family. Your dad was an exceptional person and I am very fortunate to have known him as a teacher, coach and just as your dad. I always loved his sense of humor. He made playing sports fun back in the old days at Brunswick High. He was kind and courteous to me any time I saw him. I have thought about him often through the years and those memories have always brought a smile to my face. Of course he loved teasing us Durham Road guys! He lived an active and meaningful life Brad, and you should be very proud of his accomplishments as well as his love of family.
My deepest sympathies,

Steve Perreault

Dear Brad, Lynda, Cam & Kyle,
Sports events have not been the same since Arthur became ill. We were fortunate that we were able to sit with Arthur one last time at the game in Gardiner just a few short weeks ago. Arthur may have loved his sports but he loved all of you more & was so very proud to be known as Cam & Kyle's grandfather. Arthur may not be sitting next to us at any more ball games but he will always be there with us. We will miss you Arthur but you will never be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Dear Brad,Mama Bishop,Cam & Kyle- Josh,Tim & myself extend our deepest sympathies to you at this time. Art was an extremely loving & supportive grandfather to the boys. It was a rare event to not see him at any of either ones games and when his health started to fail we would see Joanne traveling the state with art. I remember one game in particular at Lincoln Academy. Kyle had reached his pitch count late in the game. I was sitting with Art and they called in Josh from short. He says Oh great who are they sending in now. I said Art be careful what you say that's my son. He said I don't care who it is he better not blow this game. We both laughed. It was so hard not to get mad at him-and I tried-because in the end he was always right!! We are going to miss him terribly. YOU HAVE ALL BEEN TRULY BLESSED WITH A WARM AND LOVING PERSON SUCH AS ART

Hi Brad, Lynda, Cam and Kyle. We are so sorry for your loss. I know these last few months have been so hard on you. Peace and comfort are finally here for Art. Mike enjoyed talking with him so much at so many games. One of my most favorite and vivid memories of Art was after a game at Lincoln Academy. He almost ran me over getting to the dugout to talk to Kyle. He said to me, "that's my grandson you know. He's a great player." I could only reply "I know and he is" before he was gone trying to get to Kyle before driving home. Our thoughts are with you all.
