Daniel Walker Obituary

Daniel Roberts Walker Sr. 95
SCARBOROUGH - Daniel Roberts Walker Sr. 95 of Portland, passed away peacefully on Thursday March 20, 2015. Born in Portland on August 5, 1919, the son of Roberts Lowell and Fannie Lura Walker. Dan was predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years, Nora Anne (Greene) Walker.
Dan received his education at Portland schools after which he worked for the South Portland shipyard as a shipfitter building Liberty ships for the war effort. He joined the US Navy serving during WWII in the CBs 96th" Construction Battalion in the Southern Pacific, Philippines and China. After the war, Dan began working for Wilbur F. Blake Company and continued a long career in the industry at various plumbing shops in the area. Dan was a strong union member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 217 (now 716) supervising the installation of heating and plumbing in many hospitals, paper mills, office buildings, and other large projects. Dan was well known among his fellow workers for his strong voice but gentle ways. After his retirement from local 716 in 1984, he and his wife traveled each year to the Sea Bees reunions which took them all over the United States.
In his younger years, Dan was an avid skier, swimmer, ballroom dancer, story teller, golfer, fisherman and boater. Dan and his friends built the first cabin on the access road to Pleasant Mountain ski resort (now known as Shawnee Peak) where he taught his son's to ski, climb Mt. Washington ravine, and enjoy winter adventurers. Dan also enjoyed family outings at Maine State Park, Higgins Beach and Peaks Island. Dan and his wife spent many weekends boating up and down the New England coast with friends and family. They enjoyed the sea very much and also visited many of the Islands in Casco Bay. The Greene, Gorham, and Kelly families would join in the fun at outings. Singing would fill the air as Dan would start humming Irish melodies or old show tunes trying to get everyone to join in. Dan also enjoyed helping his son Joe build and maintain race cars in the 1980's and early 90's. His grandson Jason enjoyed his grandpa's presence at the racing garage and often would be with him learning how to hold a burning torch, put on a welding hood or help in some way.
Dan leaves two sons Daniel R. Walker Jr. of Brunswick and Joseph M. and wife Elizabeth Walker of Gorham; grandchildren Lisa A. Walker of Farmington, Jason and wife Jennywren Walker of Scarborough, great-grandchildren Bailey, Skylamae and Raife Walker, Shane Walker O'Neill, Heather MacDonald and two great-great-grandchildren, Brooklynn and Bristol Webber. He was predeceased by his brother Walter Walker of Gorham. He also leaves Walter's children Sharon, Walter, Nelson, and Gary.
A period of visitation for Dan will be held this Friday, March 27, 2015, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. visitation at the
Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home
, 199 Woodford St. Portland; where a funeral service will be held following visitation at 12:00 p.m.

I am saddened to hear of Danny's passing. I have special memories of Danny and Nora as a child then as an adult at the Elks Club. My dad ran the Bingo there for many years with Danny's help. He always had the best stories! I send thoughts and prayers to his entire family.
