Eleanor M. Ashby, 73
BRUNSWICK -- Formerly of Freeport, Eleanor lived with her daughter Joyce and her grandchildren Kimmy, Kasey and John in West Bath. She died on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011.
She was born in Bath the daughter of Ernest and Thelma (Young) Doughty on Nov. 20, 1937. Her family moved to Falmouth where she attended Falmouth schools.
She married Vernon A. Ashby Sr. of Portland on July 1, 1960. They made their home on the Bragdon Road in Freeport where they lived for over 30 years. Mr. Ashby passed away in 1995.
They had four children, Mrs. Gloria Bailey of Bath, Ms. Joyce Mathews of West Bath, Mrs. Sandra Martin of Columbia, Miss., and Vernon A. Ashby Jr. of West Bath. She has 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, whom she dearly loved spending time with. She had 13 brothers and sisters and she is survived by Christine Libby of Arundel and Mrs. Alice Rickett of Kittery. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews including Linda, David, Nelson, Stevie, Ricky, Cathy, Levi, Eric, Allan and Tommy.
She worked at R.J. Peacock Cannery of Portland, where she met her husband. She also had worked at Worumbo Mill in Lisbon Falls, Marcrafts Inc. of Freeport, the Eastland Shoe Co. of Freeport, Freeport Convalescent Center and Dennison Seafood Co. retiring in 2003. She provided janitorial services at her church in Lisbon Falls.
She enjoyed genealogy research and was an avid crossword puzzle enthusiast.
At her request, there will be no funeral services. There will be a private family graveside committal service in Elmwood Cemetery in Pownal in the spring with the Rev. William H. Bailey. Mama, I miss you so much, you are my best friend. The love only a daughter could feel for her mother. I know I told you everyday but I love you!! I wish you didn't leave me I'm not sure what to do... I'm numb. I know with all my heart your in heaven and that gives me peace. But it was so hard telling the babes and littleman is taking it so hard, you are also his bestfriend. Mama I'm trying so hard to stay strong just like you wanted. Mama I love you bunches and a' bunches!!
