1928 - 2010
AGAWAM, Mass. -- Ernest R. Therrien, 82, of Mansion Woods, died Wednesday in Baystate Medical Center. Ernest was born Feb. 18, 1928, in Sanford, the son of Ernest J. and Alda (Ricard) Therrien. He earned a B.A. in Economics/Business from the University of Maine, Orono, and a master's degree in Economics from Calvin Coolidge College of Liberal Arts, Boston. He received a second master's degree and pursued doctoral studies in Economics at Fordham University, N.Y.
During his 25 years at St. Francis College, Biddeford, (now the University of New England), Ernest was a Professor of Economics and held several administrative positions, including Acting President. Ernest was active in civic and political organizations and served as City Treasurer for Biddeford under the late Mayor Gilbert Boucher.
In 1974, Ernest joined the faculty at Springfield Technical Community College, Springfield, Mass., as a Professor in Business and Management Studies. He taught as an adjunct professor at Western New England College, American International College, and Westfield State College. Ernest was appointed a member of the Massachusetts Board of Regents' Task Force on Continuing Education.
For many years, he was a leader in the Massachusetts Community College Council, the union for faculty and professional staff. Ernest was elected to the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Teachers Association and the National Education Association. He was elected or appointed to numerous state and national task forces and committees, including the Massachusetts Higher Education Leadership Council, the NEA Northeast Leadership Planning Committee, and the NEA Negotiations Team for a possible NEA-AFT merger. My wife, Madeleine, and I wemt to Church of St Anne in Gorham, Maine this morning and the Pastor, Fr.Lawrence Conley came up to us in church and asked us if we had heard of Ernest passing away this past week. The news hit me like a thunderbolt and caused me great discomfort because Ernest and I go back to the very earlier years of St. Francis College where Ernest and I both shared many teaching experiences at this fine Franciscan institution. Our condolences to you Patricia and your family for your father shall never be forgotten for all the educational and administrative experiences we shared together for so many years, he was a real close friend and associate and will be greatly missed. With all our love and salutations. Hervé

As Ernest's daughter, it is comforting to read the comments that have been posted and to hear from others who were positively impacted by my Father. I certainly know I am fortunate to have had such a wonderful man to call my Dad.

Carolyn
I was deeply saddened to learn of Ernest passing. There are few people in my professional career that have inspired me as much as Ernest did.. His leadership skills while under pressure stand out as something that was truely unique , at least in the world of Condominium Management... I know for sure that that I am a better person for having known him and I suspect many others feel the same.My thoughts and prayers are with you at this most difficult time

My deepest sympathy in the loss of the dearest and gentlest soul I have ever known. Ernest had a wonderful sense of humor (even when he got a river "soaking" on a very bumpy boat ride!) He will be missed for his many fine qualities.

I remember fondly all the MTA memories and experiences I shared with Ernie through the years. Although we didn't always agree, it was always a mutual agree to disagree in his own inimitable fashion. He was a person of integrity who treated others with dignity and respect because it was the right thing to do and came naturally to him. My thoughts are with you at this time.

My deepest sympathies to the family, with special love to Pat, Dennis, Timothy and Zachary.
I always had so much affection and admiration for Mr. Therrien. He is a very diginified, classy and considerate man. He always treated us (Patty's friends) with great respect...no matter how silly we probably were in our teen years. His quiet smile and low-keyed humor will be remembered forever as he is a gracious and graceful man.
With love and sympathy,
-Jeanne Valliere Gall

You were always so kind and generous - a gentle soul. I often think back and remember the times you and my Aunt Carolyn took me ballroom dancing. You taught me the foxtrot and always made me feel special. With fond memories and love, Kim Heroux
