He was a math and computer teacher for many years at Tabor Academy, Shadyside Academy, and Waynflete School. One of his proudest accomplishments was introducing computer classes for students in each of these schools in the 1960s and 70s.

Dear Stephens Family,

I was so sad to hear about the loss of your father and husband! Horace Stephens was an incredible teacher who I will always remember with great enthusiasm. I had Mr. Stephens as an instructor at Waynflete while in the 7th and 8th grade. I was friends with Carrie during that time but lost contact her after I left Waynflete. I wanted to express my appreciation to Mr. Stephens for his influence on me in computers. I am just sorry I didn’t get to express them to him before his passing.

He had one computer set up for students to experiment with and I took many opportunities to use it. This was the beginning of my passion in computers. I continued my experiences with computers at Deering High School, USM, and USAF but always remember my first experience introduced by Mr. Stephens. I currently work at Southern Maine Community College in the IT Department and also teach several computer courses as well. I attribute my successes in the computer field to my initial exposure by Horace Stephens. He was a wonderful and inspiring teacher. I will always remember him with gratitude and appreciation. I have wondered many times the whereabouts of Mr. Stephens, Carrie, and the family. I was not aware that they were here still in Maine since I had many years ago, been told that they had moved out of state. I regret not getting in touch with him before his passing. I lost my own father this summer and know the void he has left in my life. I just wanted you to know that Mr. Stephens touch many students’ lives, especially mine, with his caring, wisdom, and passion for teaching. I am glad to have known him and had him for a teacher. I will carry with me my memories of him and only hope to be as great a teacher as him.

My deepest sympathy and God Bless!
