Leona Hanson Obituary

Leona Mae Smith Hanson, 73
HOLLIS -- Leona Mae Smith Hanson, 73, of Salmon Falls Road in Hollis, passed away surrounded by her loving family on March 7, 2010, at her home after a long illness.
She was born in Limington on May 28, 1936, the daughter of the late F. Leon and Luella (Hartford) Smith. Leona attended Hollis schools and graduated from Hollis High School in 1953. In 1957, she graduated from Gorham State Teachers College and went on to teach 1st grade in Sanford for five years.
On July 26, 1958, she married George Hanson at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Afterward, she left her teaching position to be a homemaker for her two children Nancy and Scott. In later years, she worked at UNUM, was a substitute teacher and was a merchandiser for American Greetings.
She enjoyed spending time at their camp at Little Ossipee Lake, where she water-skied and went for many boat rides, as well as snowmobiling with her family, collecting buttons, flower gardening, baking cookies and desserts, making quilts, square dancing, bird watching and playing the piano. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who treasured her family most.
She was the leader of the Salmon Falls 4-H Club, a member of the Sunshine Club, York County Button Club, Maine State Button Society, and a Past Noble Grand of the Forest Rebekah Lodge. She attended the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
She was predeceased by her parents; her sister Frances; and brother-in-law, Richard Anderson of Dayton. She will be greatly missed by her beloved husband of 51 years, George Hanson; daughter Nancy Hogan and her husband Dan, son Scott Hanson and Laurie Cressey; grandson Brandon Hogan all of Hollis; brothers Elwin Smith and his wife Ruby of Bath, Elton 'Bud' Smith and his wife Alva; sister-in-law Mildred Hanson, brothers-in-law Frank and Avis Hanson, Robert Hanson and Willie Whitten all of Hollis, Paul and Nellie Hanson of Standish; and several special nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Kurt Ebrahim and his staff at the Maine Center for Cancer Medicine in Scarborough.
Visiting hours will be on Tuesday evening, (tonight), March 9, from 6-8 p.m., at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church on Pleasant Hill Road in Hollis. A funeral service will be held at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church on Wednesday afternoon, March 10, at 1 p.m. Burial will be in the spring at Meeting House Hill Cemetery. Dear Uncle George, Nancy, Dan, Scott, Laurie & Brandon, Our hearts ache for all of you. Aunt Leona was a rare breed, a true lady in everything she did; the doll clothes she made, her delicious cooking, the way she dressed, kept her home, treated other people and even the wrapping of a packge was always perfection. I still cherish the doll clothes that she made for me as a child. Our prayers are with you.
