Marjorie Lunt Obituary

Marjorie Haynes Lunt, 95
PORTLAND - Marjorie Haynes Lunt, 95, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 26, 2015, at MMC, with her daughter, Jacqui, by her side. She will forever be with her husband, John; and her parents, Frances (Miller) and Isaiah Haynes.
She had currently been a resident of the Cedars Nursing Facility. She had also lived in Portland as a child, as well as Kennebunk in the 1980s and 1990s. In her youth, she had spent much time in Bar Harbor with her paternal grandmother and step-grandfather. Marjorie's grandfather had died at sea, going around the horn just before her father was born.
Marjorie was born in Portland, on Jan. 19, 1920. She was very close to her parents, Frances and Isaiah, of whom she was very proud. Her mother was a teacher and her father a well-known grocer in Portland.
Marjorie graduated from Deering High School in 1940, where she played the bass fiddle.
In 1942, she married John Osgood Lunt, and they made their home in East Deering, on the site of the old Daniel Lunt Farm. Summers and autumns were spent on Long Island in Casco Bay. The cottage was a real eye-opener to her with no inside water and no electricity. She would iron John's shirts for work with andirons. Marjorie was taught well by her father-in-law, Eugene. She not only learned to clam and fish, but how to clean and prepare Casco Bay's bounty for the table. Jacqui always said that she would put her mother up against any fisherman on Long Island for cleaning and preparing her catch. In addition, she never ate a clam that she didn't dig and clean.
She was also involved on the island with the Evergreen United Methodist Church, always baking for the summer fair. Marjorie loved to sew and made curtains for the cottage as well as clothes for her two daughters. The cottage took on "spic and span" sheen once she had spent one summer on the island. Her granddaughter, Rebecca said she never knew her grandmother without a broom in her hand, sweeping the front porch. Marjorie never learned to swim, but made sure her two daughters did. Many afternoons were spent at "Singing Sands" as she watched the girls swim the beach. Even though she couldn't swim she did go with John in the boat. She often said to him that she felt much safer getting into the punt than in the "Maybe." John didn't try to convince her otherwise.
Her husband, John; and her parents predeceased Marjorie. Survivors include her daughters Jacqueline O. Lunt of Portland and Long Island, and Susan (Lunt) Wilcox and her husband, Fulton R. Wilcox of New Jersey and Long Island. Grandchildren include Rebecca Lunt Wilcox and her husband Robert J. Hanney, Jonathan Wilcox and his wife Joanne, and Rob Wilcox and his partner, Rose Rubino, all of New Jersey and Long Island. She also leaves six great-grandchildren, Kathleen, Grace, Robbie, Jack, Julia, and Jonas.
Expression of thanks go to long time caregiver, Marie Riddle; the doctors and nurses, especially Shannon and Amanda of R2, MMC; the nursing staff at the Cedars; Jim for his piano music; Fulton Wilcox for calling his mother-in-law every night; and Wendy Whiting Dennison for always being there for her Aunt Marge.
A visiting hour will be held on Monday, July 13, 2015, from 10-11 a.m., followed by a celebration of life at 11 a.m. at A. T. Hutchins Funeral & Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland. To share memories with the family, please go to www.athutchins.com
