Martin Silverman Obituary

Martin A.
    Silverman, 81
PORTLAND -- Martin Silverman was born on Sept. 2, 1926, in Lynn, Mass., the son of Hyman and Rachel Silverman.
After graduation from high school, he entered the navy and saw active duty in World War II. In 1948 he married Clara Canton and had five loving daughters.
At the age of 14, he entered the family business, Century Tire, founded by his father Hyman and it turned into life long position. To him, this was not a job but a labor of love. He had a devoted following of loyal customers. He worked there for 67 funoculous' years.
He led a full life and his loves were his family and many friends, golf, the race track and animals.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Clara. He is survived by his daughters Sandra, Julie, Valerie, Kimberly and Brenda. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings are his twin brother Milton, and Jack and Frances. In addition, he is also survived by a special friend, Mary Stevens.
Dick Aaronson of Century Tire said, We have lost a great friend who had an incredible zest for life. In the 46 years he and I worked together, there wasn't a day that went by that he didn't make me laugh at something he would say to me. Everybody he came in contact with became a new friend. His co-workers and I will miss his ability to cause controversy over the Red Sox and the Celtics. Whatever position we took, he'd take the opposite just to create controversy.
Services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 11 a.m. at The Levy Interfaith Chapel, 471 Deering Ave., Portland. Interment will take place at Brooklawn Cemetery following services. Arrangements by The Jewish Funeral Home, Portland.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to:
The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland
     P.O. Box 336
    Westbrook, Maine 04098
or to a charity of one's choice.

Father's Day was tough for the first time in 56 years not being able to call my Dad. Every year on June 20th he would call and sing me Happy Birthday. I will miss that call this year. I was wondering if he would have golfed in the rain on Sunday. I bet he would. That was one of his greatest times on Riverside. We all miss him so much. We miss Uncle Milty and Cindie and hope they might be all together with our Mom's.
I miss you Dad.

Our Thoughts and Prayers go out to the Silverman family. My name is Peter Allen and Marty was introduced to me by my Mother Vicki."You want tires for your Blazer Peter go see Marty down to Century Tire On Marginal Way.Well,I'll tell you,I don't know if I always got the best deal but Marty always made me feel like I did.Marty always acted like he knew me forever.I will always be greatful for that.He never forgot
who I was either.I'd call on the phone and think I would have to explain who I was and Marty always remembered me and that Vicki was my mother. He would go out of his way.If I told Marty I didn't have alot tospend at the time he would say,"I think I just got a beautiful set of used ones in yesterday, and he would physically go out and search for them himself. Most of the time walk right to the tires I needed.(We all know there are alot of tires there).Marty you have made a great impact on alot of lives with the tremendous example you set in life.I only went to get tires but I feel GOD had his reasons for me to meet this man. Thanks Marty for everything you will be greatly missed. To Century Tire:You always seem to have an AWESOME crew of people like Marty and my hope is that you know this.Jim is a special one as well and I look forward to dealing with him as I have before. You're more than just a Tire Company. You're Our Family.Let's all remember Marty isn't a loss, HE IS, and always will be our BLESSING.Thanks.

I learned today from Milty that Marty had passed away, his very special twin. My condolences to family and friends.

We all could learn a great deal from Marty's example. Marty probably had bad days like the rest of us, but one never knew it. He was always jolly, a smile, and that impish twinkle in his eye. He was an astute student of life and enjoyed every minute of it. He was prone to dwell on the positive.

What an example he set as a businessman. He never tired of his work, and wanted the best for his customer. He always found a way to accomodate the customer. He was forthright and knowledgable about his product, and safety was foremost in his mind. Over the years my admiration for him grew thru his 50th and then 60th year working and on. Year to year he always shared the same glee for life. His customers could not help but make a connection with him personally and many of us returned year to year looking forward to seeing him.

Godspeed, will miss you, Marty.

With Love, from Shelley LePage

To the family of Marty Silverman:

So deeply sorry to hear of Marty's passing. My name is Shelley LePage,a Registered Nurse. I now reside in Manhattan,NY, I am building a Nutrition & Health Consulting Business, and have for the past 4 years. I lived in Portland, Me most of my adult life. Marty and Milty of Century Tire have always been so much like family to me. They have taken care of my tires for the past 20 years, what can I say, just the best, and as Marty said to me, "You have been awarded a lifetime supply of air" and always with that Silverman smile that warmed the heart on the coldest day. Marty and I always shared golf stories, as I am a lover of the game also. I just saw Marty & Milty when home mid October, so glad I did. Century tire would never let me travel back to Manhattan without the Silverman review of my tires, and that has meant ever so much to me.
My heart is sad, and I will always hold onto the best memories of a wonderful man and human being. I pray that the memories you hold as a family will somehow bring you peace at this difficult time.
And, if one is to leave this good God's earth, what better way, than on the golf course, what he loved the most. That smile, that sincere from the heart and soul smile will never be forgotten.
I am attaching a picture I took of Marty & Milty fall of 2006,with my car that they tended to so well. I was planning to bring to them this Christmas, which I still will to Milty & Century Tire.
My deepest and sincerest sympathy to all who loved Marty.

Warmest Regards,
Shelley

TO, THE GALS;
AUNTIE GIN AND I SHALL ALWAYS TREASURE THE MANY WONDERFUL TIMES WE SPENT AT THE "SILVERMAN" HOME ON MAYER ROAD DURING OUR VACATIONS OVER THE PAST MANY YEARS. THE LOVE AND GENEROSITY SHOWN BY MARTY, HIS BEAUTIFUL WIFE CLARA AND FIVE SWEET, GORGEOUS DAUGHTERS WAS UNPARALLELED TO ANY WE'VE KNOWN. THE LOVE OF THE THURLOW FAMILY GOES OUT TO SANDY, JULIE, VALLERIE, KIMBERLY BRENDA AND THEIR FAMILIES. ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT YOU HAVE A LOVING FAMILY OVER ON THE LEFT COAST.

Our thoughts go out to all of the Silverman daughter's as we remember your dear father . We were so hurt to hear the news of Uncle Martys passing. Uncle Marty was always so kind and caring to us as he always made sure that our cars had tires that were safe for the highway . When it came to golfing he would always make time for Gary and a round of golf . We always felt welcome in the family home with Aunt Clara and Uncle Marty and we are grateful for the memories . May your memories sustain you in the difficult days. Uncle Marty will truly be missed .
Our love to your families . Gary and Nancylee Leighton

What a shock. Century Tire took care of our whole family's cars and trucks for at least 60 years. For the past 40 it has been Marty. When our own kids were old enough to have cars , we wouldn't allow them on the road without sending over to Marty to make sure they would be safe. His business was trust. He always would fit you in even when you arrived for the snow tires negligently in the blizzard! He was such fun to do business with. We will miss Marty Silverman very much. And remember him always.

Hey Dad
I went to Riverside today to see where you decided to rest your head. You chose a beautiful spot. I will always remember all the sledding trips you brought us on. Just writing to you makes me smile so big. You brought so much joy and laughter to my life. You were just as silly as anyone could be. You still make me smile every day. Boobie must have been a wonderful mother because you turned out to be my brightest star.

Sandra, my mom so wishes that she could be with you during this difficult time. She is only a phone call away if you need her...I know that you know that. I also have no doubt that Wayne and the boys are taking good care of you. You are lucky to have them. I had not seen your dad in many years, but he was a neat man and he will be missed. Tell Wayne to give you a hug for me. Thinking of you, your sisters and the rest of your family.

Valerie -
I just heard of your father's passing and wanted to tell you how very sorry I am for your loss. He was always so indulgent of the neighborhood kids coming over to your house when we were all so much younger. That fabulous house on Mayer Road was the place to be when we were growing up. He always remembered me when I had to go to Century Tire over the years, even if he hadn't seen me in many, many years. He was a treasure, your dear father, and I just wanted you to know that you and your sisters are in my thoughts.
Take care, Lisa Grimaldi

Our hearts are heavy with sorrow with this news. Marty was a joy to be around and made you feel like the most important person in his day. Whenever my wife and I stopped to see her dad Leroy, at the shop on Marginal Way, it was always a treat to say hi to Marty. Getting tires was a fun thing to do, whether it was Marty or Milty that had what we needed.
May God Bless Milty & his Family,

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family in this difficult time of sorrow. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." Marty you let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your father in heaven. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." I will miss Marty for his humor and his sweet nature. I wish I had the pleasure of meeting Marty sooner than I had but I am happy knowing that I was introduced to him at all. I was more than happy to take his calls anytime and would look forward to him calling Anne and I at Countrywide. At our request he sent Anne and I pictures of him at previous Birthday parties, family pictures and pictures with Milton that illustrated his upbeat personality and his love for life itself. He will be greatly missed by many but know that he left us playing a sport he loved and spoke about often! My condolences go out to his family in this time of sorrow. God bless him.

What a celebration of life Marty was! I knew him on a business level through Century Tire. He was a favorite customer of mine by far. Even though I never met him face to face, I would feel his great warm smile over the phone during all of our conversations. Marty was a one of a kind great man who lived a great life! We will miss seeing Marty at all the family birthday parties, etc. His unique birthday cards were one of a kind. He was a wonderful person and loving family man. He always had a smile on the outside for everyone to see, no matter what problems he may have had within. His passing was sudden & a shock to the family, but he died as he would have wanted, on the golf course. He will be sadly missed by all.
