Michael Rubin Obituary

Michael Marc Rubin, 63
SANFORD - Michael Marc Rubin of Sanford and Bennington, Vt. died peacefully in his Vermont apartment on Monday morning.
Michael was born to Leah Patiky Rubin and the late Gerard Rubin on Dec. 3, 1952 in Smithtown, Long Island, N.Y. He was the third of four children and the first son to Leah and Jerry.
Michael and his family lived in Stonybrook Long Island where they were part of a vibrant and close knit Jewish community led by Michael's maternal grandfather. Here, he developed his love of his Jewish faith and his value of family. He also learned to sail and learned a lot helping his father at his veterinary clinic.
Michael and his family moved to Stillwater, Okla. when he was in high school. It was in Oklahoma that Michael, after a stint at college, decided to enlist in the United States Navy. This decision would prove to set the course for the rest of his life.
After being stationed at various bases in the US and Carribean, Michael was sent to Brunswick Naval Air Station in Brunswick. It was during his time here that he met his wife, Sue Ann Morrill Rubin at a University of Southern Maine party. After dating for a year, Michael and Sue were married in South Portland on May 25, 1975. Michael continued to serve in the United States Navy as a Naval Reservist until his final honorable discharge in 1990.
Michael and Sue moved into a brand new house in Sanford as they were expecting their first child, Sarah, in 1979. Another daughter, Kayla, was born in 1983.
Michael began working at Sprague Electric, an electronics manufacturer, in Sanford in 1979. He began working on the assembly line, became a shift manager, and later became a quality control engineer and lab manager. He continued to work for the company after Sprague was bought out by Vishay and stayed with the company after they shut down their Sanford manufacturing plant. Michael spent time working for Vishay in Beer Sheva, Israel and later took a position at their plant in Bennington, Vt. commuting between Sanford and Vermont weekly.
Michael was an incredibly dedicated father and husband. He was incredibly involved in both of his daughter's sports careers. He began officiating USA and High School Swimming as one of his daughters was very involved in swimming and remained a top official and member of the Maine Swimming Officials Association after she had graduated. He also helped coach t-ball and soccer as well as carting his daughters to meets, games, and competitions all over the northeast.
Michael, along with his wife, was also incredibly committed to his religious community. As a board member at his synagogue, Etz Chaim, Michael spent many Saturdays and High Holidays helping to organize and lead weekly services, Sundays teaching Hebrew School, and countless other days tutoring students for their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs.
Michael was predeceased by his father, Gerard Rubin; and sister, Marion Copley. He is survived by his mother, Leah Rubin of Stamford, Conn.; his wife of 40 years, Sue Rubin of Sanford; his daughter, Sarah Rubin and her husband, Bob Soucy of Portland, daughter, Kayla Rubin and her husband, Jason Patterson of New York, N.Y.; sister, Elizabeth Rubin of Stamford, Conn., brother, Gabriel Rubin and his family of Jerusalem, Israel; and beloved grandson, George.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Etz Chaim Synagogue, 36 Bacon St. in Biddeford. Interment will take place at Mount Sinai Cemetery in Portland at the conclusion of the service. Reception will then be held at Etz Chaim Synagogue at 2 p.m. Arrangements by Jewish Funeral Home.

My thoughts and prayers are with Mike's family at this very difficult time. Mike was my next door neighbor here in Bennington. He was always very pleasant and kind. Over the 4 years I've lived here, I've had many nice conversations with Mike-from talking about our childhoods, families, his travels and military service, our love for Subarus, his love for photography-but the thing he talked about most times was his beloved family. He was so happy to tell my husband&I he was having a grandbaby and even more excited when he found out it was a boy, and he talked many times of how proud he is of his daughters and all they've accomplished. Mike spoke recently of retiring and spending more time at home in Maine, he was excited to be considering that. Not long ago my husband and I watched the Blood Moon event with Mike, he was out snapping pictures as we often would see him doing-he seemed to have a deep appreciation for God's beautiful creations. Sue and family, I hope your wonderful memories of Mike keep him very much alive in your hearts. I lost my Mother last winter, so to Mike's daughters-I can understand the pain and sadness you must be feeling right now, and I'm so truly sorry your family is going through this. The longing for him will always be part of you, but hopefully in time the pain becomes less sharp. My husband and I have been thinking of Mike and talking about him all week-we, just neighbors, miss him and are mourning his loss, so for all of you we know the loss is immeasureable. We will continue to think of you all and pray that comfort finds its way to you. Our deepest condolences, Nicolette (&Arthur) Beagle of Bennington, VT

My deepest condolences during this difficult time. Life is so short and those we love are gone from our lives too quickly. Our compassionate Heavenly Father promises to empty the graves in the near future. This promise is found at Hosea 13:14.

To the Patiky- Rubin Family,
Please accept my condolences on the loss of your husband, father, son and brother, Mark. I am sorry he left this world at such a young age.
I remember the family throughout my very young childhood as we lived next to Uncle Sam + Aunt Rose.
I remember Leah + Annabelle, and Mark + Gabriel filled with vivaciousness and warmth.
It's Phyllis Kaplan, youngest daughter of Ted and Zena Kaplan. Many summer evenings, as a toddler + I would water the tomatoes with Uncle Sam as dusk fell and he held my hand. He was very gentle, and very different from my own grandfather, Samuel Kaplan.
The Patiky- Kaplan families were intertwined by marriage, Judaism, geography and the arts.

I live in Bali, Indonesia now but lived in southwestern Vermont for over 30 years; this is why I read the Bennington Banner online. I saw Michael's obituary and so many good memories came flooding back.

As you grieve together, please know that I remember the extended family with fondness.

Sincerely,
Phyllis Kaplan

P.S. My father Ted, is alive, healthy and enjoying his Life in La Jolla CA at 99! My sweet, artistic Mother, Zena passed away in 2009 from Alzheimers.
