Raymond Card Obituary

Raymond (Ray) F. Card Sr., 94
TOPEKA, Kan. - Raymond F. Card, 94, of Topeka, Kan., formerly of Scarborough, passed away peacefully Sept.11, 2018. He was born on August 6, 1924, in Highpine, Maine. He was the son of the late William and Gertrude Card.
Ray joined the Navy on June 24, 1942. He was assigned to the Light Cruiser U.S.S. Columbia, he served in S. W. Pacific until the end of World War II. The U.S.S. Columbia took heavy damage due to being hit by three Kamikazes. Ray was proud of his service as his ship received ten battle stars and two presidential unit citations for her service in Leyte Gulf.
In 1957 Raymond married Shirley Fournier and the two started their lives together in Connecticut and shortly thereafter they returned to Maine and bought a home in Scarborough. Raymond was predeceased by his wife Shirley who passed away in 2009.
Ray worked for A & P as a driver before owning his own independent contract with the U.S. Postal Service for over 35 years. Ray spent many years as a devoted member of the Masonic Orchard Lodge #215 as well as the Shriner's and the American Legion.
One of Ray's passion was hunting rabbit, deer, and moose at his hunting camp in Elliotsville, Maine. Ray trained beagles for his hunting expeditions. Fishing, playing cribbage, snowmobiling, and quality time with friends and family are what made camp so special.
Ray was also a family man. He was a strong, loving role model for the many loved ones he has left behind. Full of stories from the war, the past, and the voice to teach the lessons for the younger generation of today. He had a lot of wisdom marked with wit and a smile that could light up the room. Ray loved to cook for his family. Every Sunday you could find the family gathered at the Scarbourgh home with a feast that Ray was proud to have cooked up from one of his many hunting trips.
Raymond was predeceased by son, Robert A. Card; brothers, Carroll, William Jr., Kenneth; sisters, Florence, Jeanette, Elizabeth and Patricia. Raymond is survived by his wife Beth A. Martin; four daughters, Linda Rae Pierce, Deborah McGarey and husband John McGarey, Sherry Piper and Cindy Ralston; three sons, Douglas Card and his wife Norma Card, Raymond Card Jr., Charles Card and wife Peggy Card. He lovingly leaves behind many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ray was a force. He loved, lived, cooked, mentored, amazing father, great hunter, loyal husband, devoted friend, dog trainer, adventurous, spontaneous, humorous, great provider, there are so many moments and memories that I'll always cherish. His family accepted me and always made me feel like part of their family. Forever grateful and will never forget how great a part you were in my life. It meant a lot. Thank you for your lessons and letting me enjoy Sunday dinners that were always made with love. You even gave me permission to sleep in your bed at camp and let me wear your huge comfy slippers! ( not sure u knew about slippers) I'm so happy you're home and where you belong. God speed and I know we'll meet again. Love always.
