Diego Tobon Obituary

Diego Tobon Diego Tobon, died peacefully on Sunday, February 16, at Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA, surrounded by family, eight weeks after receiving a bone marrow transplant. Diego was born in Colombia on October 14, 1962. He is survived by his wife, Carolina Alzate, their two daughters Isabela (8) and Camila (5) and parents Hernando and Edith Tobon. Diego is also survived by his siblings Ivette, Mabel, Julieta, Edith, Liliana, Marcela, Ivn and Santiago, nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. Diego studied Economics at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, in Colombia, received a B.S. in Economics in 1987 from Central Michigan University, Saginaw, MI, and, in 1992, he received an MBA at Case Western Reserve University, Weatherhead School of Management in Cleveland, Ohio. His 22-year-career in bank management included 18 years with National City Bank. In 1994, Diego started and developed the National City Structured Finance Office in Chicago and later served as Senior Managing Director and Head of Debt Capital Markets until 2009. Diego's family moved to the Philadelphia area where he joined First Niagara Bank, N.A. in 2010 and was most recently Senior Managing Director - Capital Markets. He was pleased to return to Montgomery County where he had spent one year as a Rotary Exchange student with the Souderton-Telford Rotary Club in 1980-81. Diego was a devoted husband and father, a supportive son and brother, a friend and trusted colleague, and an exceptional leader in the capital markets business. Diego's passionate love for his family was beautiful to witness. His love for life and others, generosity and joy were gifts to those around him. Diego will be missed, but his legacy lives on through his beautiful, sweet, and smart girls. His passion for life and work is also a meaningful legacy that will be remembered by those that were touched and share his journey through life. A Celebration of Life service will start with a visitation on Saturday, March 1 at 9:00 a.m. at the St Thomas of Villanova Church (University Campus) followed by mass at 10:00 am. Diego was truly one-of-a-kind. He was a wonderful co-worker, teammate, and inspiring professional. I speak for many of us from NatCity when I say we learned so much from him. My heart goes out to Carolina, Isabela, and Camila. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Diego was a smart, energetic and enthusiastic co-worker. I will miss his great smile and his positive spirit.

My deepest sympathies to Carolina, Isabela, Camila and all of Diego's family. I first met Diego over 20 years ago as a Leveraged Finance banker in Chicago. He was truly one of the most loved and well respected bankers I have ever known; smart, honest and fun. Even when times were tough he was upbeat and positive. His great energy had a tremendous impact on everyone that worked with him. I remember fondly the day he told me about Carolina, a lovely private banker he had met. He knew from the start he had found the love of his life. Later, he shared with me the great joy of being a father to 2 lovely girls and the many blessings of his family. I speak without hesitation on behalf of all the bankers that worked with Diego over the years; he was a great man of tremendous character and we will miss him dearly.

I extend my most heartfelt sympathy to the entire Tobon family. Diego was always one of my favorite people from the many years we worked together at National City. He was so loved by our company that when he told us he had to leave us to move to Chicago, we started an office there to keep him. I have met few people with his combination of intellect, common sense, humility, friendliness and energy. His memory will forever live with all of us whose lives he has touched and enriched.
