It deeply saddens all of us to share with you that Lois Jean Schmeling, of Manistee, passed away unexpectedly at 88 on Augst 29, 2023 at Manistee Munson Hospital.
She was born in Arcadia on December 1, 1934, one of five children to Charles and Hilda Werle. Lois had a strong work ethic. One of her first jobs was working for Century Boat Company as a billing clerk. She went on to be a waitress later in life. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, from traveling to different places, feeding the birds, and going on color tours with her granddaughter to reminiscing about funny moments with her grandson. She also enjoyed playing card games with her family and reading Danielle Steele novels.
Lois is survived by her son, Alan Schmeling, of Manistee, and fiancé', Dee Kula; granddaughter Chelsea Schmeling, of Manistee; grandson, Trent (Katelyn) Schmeling of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin; former daughter-in-law & close friend, Marilyn Panzer, of Manistee; brother, Charles (Bonnie) Werle of Arcadia; brother-in-law, Larry (Sandy) Schmeling, of Manistee; sister-in-law, Carol Schmeling, of Manistee; and numerous nieces and nephews. A special thank you goes out to Heather Green, who shared in her life and provided much comfort to her with things like entertainment and food.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Marge Klauman, Arlene Olson, and Ellen Werle, in infancy.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday October 14, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Divine Mercy Parish in Manistee with Reverend Mitchel Roman officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday morning, one hour prior to the mass. The burial will follow, at the Conway Cemetery in Arcadia.
The family would like to request that, in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Homeward Bound Animal Shelter, 736 Paws Trail, Manistee, MI 49660.
The Herbert Funeral Home of Manistee is in charge of funeral arrangements.
