Darlene Berg Obituary

Darlene Berg Passed away on July 13th surrounded by family in her Larkspur home of 37 years. She bravely suffered a long battle with Corticobasal Degeneration, a Parkinson's-like neurological disease. Darlene was born May 25, 1939, in Chicago where she later graduated with a BA in Art at the University of Illinois. She expressed her lifelong passion of the arts through painting, photography and music. Darlene's paintings radiate energetic colors and shapes flowing from quiet spaces to forces of motion and impressions of depth similar to the energy of the artist, herself. She was also an accomplished cellist, admiring how that particular instrument reaches deeper inside than others. Darlene reached deep into the hearts of all who knew her: family; ski, art, tennis and golf friends; book group; fellow wine makers and tasters and many more. One of her last wishes was to finish writing her memoir, "Dar's Canvas", which she did with the help of her dear friend, Shirley Dockstader. Darlene is survived by her husband of 51 years, Dr. Donald Berg; their son Matt Berg and wife, Karen; their daughter Caly Lynberg and wife, Rondii; and five grandchildren, Evan, Dylan and Jacqueline Berg and Wren and Tara Lynberg. Darlene's Celebration of Life service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of San Rafael at 11am on Saturday, July 28th followed by refreshments at Marin Country Club in Novato. Donations in remembrance of Darlene may be made to Hospice By The Bay, 17 E. Sir Francis Drake Blvd., Larkspur, CA 94939 http://www. hospicebythebay.org/ support-us/donate-now or to UCSF Memory and Aging Center, PO Box 45339, San Francisco, CA 94145-0339 http://memory.ucsf.edu/ ourcenter/support.

Back in the late 1950s, I met Darlene in an educational psychology class at the University of Illinois. I remember how she laughed. The world will miss that fun laugh of hers.

Darlene will always be a happy memory for me. She was one of my favorite tenants in the ICB family when I was the manager. We also played golf (she well, I not so) and her Christmas poems were always looked forward to and usually brought a tear to my eyes. Haven't be in touch in years, but she has always been in my mind and heart. You will always be special, Darlene!

To Dr. Berg & family. Darlene was a long-time friend, although we saw one another less often in recent years. Torch was an invigorating person to be with during our high school careers, and a source of many fond memories. It is sad to hear of her passing, but a comfort to know that she is beyond pain. Our thoughts are with you all. Love -- Tom & Carol Warne, Fairfield CA

A slight shock and yet not. I really liked and admired Darlene and valued her as a friend even though we saw little of each other in recent years. The last time was when we sat next to each other as we rode down in the bus from the Mountain Play several years ago, it is a precarious windy ride. I remember we talked about our kids, the time we skied at Tahoe, Larkspur and especially her lovely colorful deep paintings. I know she suffered these last few years.I will remember her bright smile, wonderful artistic talent and love of her family.

Dear Darlene,

Borne on angels' wings and having left mortal things behind, you are now free to reach out with clearer sight to those you cherish who have gone before.

You have been in our thoughts and prayers since the beginning of your brave journey. Thank you for enriching our lives with your beautiful Christmas poems and the wisdom you shared with us over the years as we all, hopefully, grew wiser with you.

While you're body is no longer with us, the light of your talent, courage and love will live in our hearts always.

Darlene and I were neighbors across the hall at our studios in Sausalito. We had good conversations, and fun wrangling with her new camera. I remember the sadness we shared when she decided she would never have the capacity to stretch her own canvas again, and gave me her canvas stretcher. I told her I would keep it for her. It is in my drawer ... She is in my heart.

Darlene was absolutely wonderful in every way - gracious, kind, welcoming, strong, talented. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched. The light she brought to the world will live on, though, in the family that carries on, remembers, and loves her.

My thoughts and prayers are with entire Berg family at this very difficult time. She was there for me at a very difficult time in my life years ago when I needed to hear just the right words to make sense of what was going on and to not get discouraged. I still remember her thoughts and I will never forget them. I still pass them along from time to time to people that need to hear the same message. I am still amazed at the grace and dignity with which Darlene handled her illness. She embraced life, a true lesson for me and just about everyone. - John Glass

We are going to miss you "Torch." You were one of a kind and very Special to all who knew and loved you. Glennys and I are so happy that you and Don were able to take the time to visit with us at our home in Costa Rica. It was very special and we shall not forget the laughs and talk of all the fun times at Maine Township High School, where so many memories still abound, after so many years. So long ago, but with Good Friends like you, it still seems like yesterday! Our Condolences go out to Don and your family. You will be missed, Torch, but never forgotten.

To Dr Berg and family, Darlene was always such a gracious hostess to me and my daughter, Alyssa when we visited with Jacq. and karen to take a cool dip in the pool. I remember the first time she took me into her studio to see her paintings and how beautiful they were. May God bless you all and know you will all be with her again in Heaven. Darlene, You brightened the neighborhood you lived in. We lived far up the road and yet to pass by your home was always to feel a sense of happiness. May God bless you now and always.

I am very saddened to read of Darlene's passing. Although I had not been in touch with the Berg family for many years, I have very fond memories of them all, especially Darlene. She always had a beautiful welcoming smile for everyone. It was clear she cherished her family. Our family enjoyed knowing Dr. Berg as our dentist for many years and we always admired Darlene's many talents. My thoughts and prayers are with the Berg's. My hope is that the bright, happy thoughts and memories of your wonderful wife and Mother soon feel as strong as your sadness must feel now. With much love.
