Gary Ingram Obituary

Gary O'Neal Ingram

Gary O'Neal Ingram, 75, of Martinsville, Va., gained his Heavenly wings on Friday, April 28, 2023, with his wife, children, and two oldest grandchildren by his bedside at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va. Gary was born on October 1, 1947, in Martinsville, Va. to the late Millard A. Ingram and Hazel T. Ingram of Axton, VA.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 ½ years, Judy Hall Ingram of the home; daughter, Wendy Griffin of the home; son, Brian O'Neal Ingram (Susanne) of Durham, N.C.; his precious and much-loved grandchildren, Rachel Griffin, Matthew Griffin, Eleanor (Ellie) Ingram, and William Ingram; and his brothers, Cordell Ingram of North Chesterfield, Va., and Mickey Ingram of Axton, Va. He is also survived by his loving mother-in-law, Lessie S. Hall of Bassett, Va.; sister-in-law, Darlene H. Earles of Bassett, Va., and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Gary graduated from Tunstall High School, Dry Fork, Va. He was a proud veteran who was drafted into the U.S. Army after high school and served in Vietnam. He worked for Winn-Dixie during high school until he was drafted. After being discharged from the U.S. Army, he worked in the office of Roy Stone Transfer, where he met his wife. After Roy Stone Transfer liquidated in 1987, he worked for Bassett Walker Knitting Mill, and later for Pluma, Nestlé Refrigerated Foods, Knauss Foods, A.C. Furniture in Axton and Eden, N.C., and J. G. Edelen. He was employed at V.F. Outdoors (previously called Nautica) at the time of his death. Gary was a well-respected and humble man and always a true gentleman. He took his work very seriously and always gave his all to whatever task he was working on. Everyone who knew Gary gave him a very good name and said he was a pleasure to work with; he had no enemies whatsoever.

Gary really enjoyed spending time with his family and taking yearly vacations. He also loved watching ACC basketball games and particularly enjoyed rooting for UVA. He enjoyed flea markets, car cruise-ins, gardening, listening to bluegrass as well as music from the 50's and 60's, and watching people dance. He was also a member of Chatmoss Baptist Church. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather and will be greatly missed.

The family will receive visitors from 12 until 1 p.m. at Bassett Funeral Service, Bassett, Va. on Thursday, May 4, 2023. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 4, 2023, at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel in Bassett, Va., at 1 p.m with Pastor Doug Ramsey officiating. Burial will follow the funeral at Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or Veterans Affairs (Salem, Va.). Online condolences can be shared at www.bassettfuneralservice.com.

To Gary's family, I worked with him at Nestle for many years, and what an enjoyment he was to be around. He loved everyone and never had a harsh word to say about any body. I know he is resting high on that mountain. I wish peace for his family left here on Earth.

Judy, Brian, Wendy and family
No words can express how I'm feeling on Gary's passing. We really had such fun times together. We loved going on the Blue Ridge Parkway and cooking out and to Mabry Mill. Gary loved country music and oldies but goldies and definitely car shows. My entire family loved him and will miss him so very much. Heaven gained a special Angel. God Bless You all.

I'm so sorry to hear of Gary's passing.
Gary is my Cousin. Im originally from Pittsburgh, and have lived in Salem, Va, for Eight Years. Gary's Family has my Deepest Sympathy. Gary visited us in Pittsburgh, when I was 8 or 9, he was in his Uniform.. We always said we should get together, but it never happened other than his Mom Hazel's Funeral a few years ago.
God Bless you Gary. Thank you for your Service Cousin Gary. When I was very young, 5 or so, Cousin Hazel used to say, I'll give you a nickel if you Twist for me. I'd move it like Chubby Checker was Playing Live in my head. Hey a nickel would buy a lot of candy in the 1960's. I was Rich, for shaking my little body. At times like this, a little humor is a good coping mechanism, it is for me. My Brother in Law Passed last week from a long battle with Covid in Pittsburgh. Kenny was also a Vietnam Veteran.
Love Cal Carter Jr.
