Arthur Lionel Brody, a member of the Lehigh University faculty from 1957 to 1989, died in his home in Bethlehem on Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at age 75, survived by his wife and help-mate of 52 years, Janice. Born July 8, 1930 in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Saul and Fannie Brody, Arthur Brody graduated from George Washington University in 1951 and received his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, in 1956. He was appointed assistant professor in Lehighs psychology department in 1957, was elevated to full professor in 1968, and served as chairman of the department from 1971 to 1976. He retired from full-time service in 1989, and in 1995 became Professor Emeritus. Professor Brodys research focused on learning processes and mathematical models of behavior. A recipient of grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and the United States Air Force, he directed research projects on multiple-choice learning, the application of statistical models to decision-making, and probabilistic information processing. During the late 1960s, he directed the NIMH undergraduate research program at Lehigh and also participated for two years in an NSF-sponsored Institute in Mathematical Psychology at the University of Michigan. His research was published in journals including the Journal of Experimental Psychology and the Journal of Comparative and Physiological Psychology. From 1964 to 1966, he served as president of the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. He was a talented pianist who began performing in swing bands at well-known resorts in the Catskill Mountains when he was 12 years old. Survivors: In addition to his devoted and much-loved wife, Professor Brody will be remembered and deeply missed by the couples loving children, Peter and Mimi Brody and their respective spouses, Jenny Brody and Harry Appelman; adored grandchildren, Sarah, Anna, and Daniel Brody and Kira and Talia Appelman; extraordinary caregiver and virtual daughter, Sheila Beahm and brother, Dr. Eugene Brody, of Mt. Vernon, New York. Services: In accordance with his wishes, Professor Brodys brain was donated to scientific research, and no formal funeral or memorial service will be held. Friends are invited to visit his wife at home to celebrate Professor Brodys life and mark his passing. Arrangements entrusted to the Long Funeral Home, Bethlehem.
