George Richards Obituary

George Richards
George Richards, 58 of Bethlehem died Monday, January 31, 2011 with his loving wife by his side after a courageous battle with cancer. Born February 2, 1952 in Bethlehem, PA, he was the husband and best friend to wife Pam for 20 years. He was the son of the late Teresa (Talaber) and Donald Richards. He graduated Freedom High School in 1970 and took courses at NCCC relating to his profession as a Bethlehem firefighter. He retired as an officer in 2006 after 29 years. He had also worked in custom woodworking and mechanics. After retiring he became a home improvement contractor who was always available to help anyone in need. After a days work, his laughter would fill the house from viewing comedy -the best medicine. George and Pam traveled extensively. His goal was to always explore new places and return to those he loved like Italy and Florida. His interest in history and the arts added to his travels. He relished sitting in an outdoor cafe with a glass of wine taking in the sights and sounds wherever he was. George was a true artisan. With a friend and over 8 years, he built a 25 ft. wooden sailboat. He also restored classic Chris Crafts and cars. His 1971 Volvo E sports coupe was known to many in the area, as well as to Volvo in Sweden. After beating Lymphoma in 1998, he rewarded himself with a 1982 Ferrari 308. He maintained it himself. He followed Formula 1 racing, World Cup soccer and the Phillies. He also loved boating and fishing in his Chris Craft on Lake Wallenpaupack. He had a diverse love of music ranging from blues/jazz/funk to the Mummers string bands. He had been to over 250 concerts in his lifetime. In recent years, he became an accomplished winemaker. George had an incredible love of life, family, friends and for a sociable cat named Angie who lived for 19 years. Survivors: Wife, Pam; and many relatives that he adored. Services: Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 6 p.m. at the Falk Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1418 Main St, Hellertown. Dear Pam. We are deeply sorry for your loss. George will be missed dearly.

Pam,

We love George for being true to his convictions and vocal about it. George was determined to seize the best that life offered, and that ultimately led to wonderful years with you, the love of his life.

George pursued his own goals and crafts meticulously and was his own harshest critic.

He was candid to a fault, true to his beliefs, and right there when needed.

A Renaissance man, George fully embraced music, friends, cars, boats, and natural beauty. He inspired others to share and immerse themselves in the things he loved.

I cherish the day that he advised our daughter Nikita to relish her eastern European roots and learn to polka. She was surprised to learn later that he was not a relative.

George's willingness to engage in dialogue, and his personal insights were a gift.

The spirit of George will always greet us at Musikfest, along with that of my own dad John Soltis. They both loved life and music, and could predictably be located at Festplatz.

George's spirit has enriched our lives and remains with us from this day forward.

To the Family of George
It seems like a moment ago George and I would be discussing all the great music we have experienced and that we would grow old talking about the last show we went to. I know George is mucking about with all the great Blues players that have passed on and is trading stories of his musical encounters from his lifetime of shows he's seen. I'm gonna miss you, George

Pam and family of George,

So hard to believe.
None of the usual gatherings will be the same without George.
My mother remembers the nice chats they had at Kenny's bash on more than one occasion.
We will all remember him and pray for you all as you endure this most difficult time.
We will raise a glass for him at this year's party!!!

Dear Pam:
We are all so sorry; this took him so quickly. I am sure this is a devastating loss to you and a big loss to his many friends. George has been my good friend for more than 40 years and I will miss him very much. I don't think I knew a person who had the challenges George had to deal with from a young age. It wasn't easy but George's spirit and attitude were always so upbeat and positive. He was a great guy and it's such a sad loss. Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss.

February 7, 2011

Pam & Family and to all of George's close friends including John Wright, Richard and William Burkland and Families

I wish to extend my heartfelt sympathy to you all. I hope your grief will be lessened by the fact that he was so well liked by all who knew him.

He was a friend of mine from many years ago. George was a great listener. I had many good conversations with him through the years. I last saw him at the Allentown Farmers Market with you (Pam)a few years ago and he looked great.

May all of your love and memories always keep you close to him. He was a very special person. May he rest in peace.
