Peter Spring Obituary

Peter Clark Spring, age 79, of Marietta, Georgia, passed away on April 7, 2022 at Wellstar Tranquility Hospice in Marietta, Georgia.

He is survived by his wife Gretchen Van Zile of Marietta, Georgia; his children Lindsey Spring of Charleston, South Carolina, Shelley Williams and husband Ashton of Atlanta, Georgia, and Mark Spring and wife Betsy of Apex, North Carolina; his granddaughters Lydia Williams (age 6), Anna Spring (age 5), and Milly Spring (age 2); his brothers Chuck Spring of Bowie, Maryland, and Jeff Spring and wife Beth of Oak Hill, Virginia; his sister Louanne Zinno and husband Ron of Pawtucket, Rhode Island; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Peter Clark Spring was born in Ashtabula, Ohio, on October 4, 1942. He graduated from Tenafly High School in New Jersey in 1960, playing basketball and baseball all four years. Peter graduated from Dickinson College in 1964 with a degree in sociology. After college, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served 4 years in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 1969, he was honorably discharged as a Captain. While in the Air Force, Peter married Jan Sweatt from Mayfield, Kentucky. They settled in Marietta, Georgia, having twin daughters, Lindsey and Shelley, and son, Mark. Peter was active in Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, and he enjoyed pursuing his passions for photography and running. Peter also devoted himself to coaching his children's sports teams. In 2005, Peter married Gretchen Van Zile in Hawaii. She will forever remember Pete's keen sense of humor and the 20 great years they had together.

A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta, Georgia, on July 16, 2022 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Peter's honor to the Alzheimer's Research & Prevention Foundation or Emory Heart and Vascular Center.

Great pictures! I can see the kid I played with when Aunt Lou and Uncle Bill came to visit. My deepest sympathies.

I will never forget when we were all kids either visiting or being visited by my Aunt Lou & Uncle Bill because it meant an opportunity to play ball or some other activity with Chuck & Peter. While I never got to know Pete in adulthood I have often thought about those great times we had as kids. My condolences.

I'm very sorry to learn of Peter's passing. Peter and I were classmates beginning at the Walter Stillman Elementary School until graduation from Tenafly High School. Peter was a good friend. He will be missed.
