Laurine Buada Obituary
Laurine Hazel Buada
Resident of San Franciso and Daly City
On April 10, 2010, Laurine Buada, 89, went peacefully to the Lord and to join her beloved husband, John, who had preceded her in death in 1988.
Laurine was born June 8, 1920, in Stuttgart, Arkansas. The eldest of 4 daughters, she came with her family to California in 1925 where her father was a high school principal in Ceres and Turlock. She was very bright and skipped several grades, starting high school at the age of 12. As a teenager she was an accomplished cellist and performed with the Modesto Symphony Orchestra
She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from UCSF with the highest score ever received in the program at that time and practiced Nursing for over 40 years. It was in San Francisco that she met and married John Buada in 1942. They raised three daughters and two sons, sending them to Catholic schools and instilling in them a love of learning, music, art and sports, and the conviction that anything was possible if you persevered.
Laurine was an intellectual who loved to read and enjoy classical music and ballet. She had a beautiful singing voice and was a soloist in the All Hallows Church choir.
After retiring as a Nursing Supervisor at St. Luke's Hospital in 1983, she volunteered at UCSF Medical Center and at a Catholic bookstore, and she taught adult literacy. She loved tending to her over 300 house plants and took great enjoyment in square dancing with her husband. After his passing, she went to Mass daily and made Perpetual Profession vows in the Holy Family Institute in 1997.
Laurine was pre-deceased by her sister Margaret Milburn. She is survived by her children: Karen Kavanagh, John Buada, Patti Buada, Luisa Buada and Charles Buada, and by 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters: Charlene Perry and Donna Weiss.
Her love for her children, grandchildren, extended family and her faith will be remembered and cherished. She will be missed by all.
The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of Mercy Retirement & Care Center in Oakland for your loving care of Laurine during her last years with you.
A memorial Mass to celebrate Laurine's life will be held Monday, May 10, at 10:45 AM at the Mercy Retirement & Care Center's Senior Center, 3431 Foothill Blvd, in Oakland, CA.
