Thomas Ayers Obituary

Colonel Thomas Ayers III, born in 1939 in Weymouth, Massachusetts, and raised in Hingham, was a devoted soldier and a loving family man. He peacefully passed away on September 30th, 2023, at the age of 83.

His remarkable journey commenced at Hingham High School, where his passion for learning and unwavering sense of duty shined brightly. Following his graduation, he pursued higher education at Boston University, courtesy of a scholarship from the Francis Ouimet Foundation and his enrollment in ROTC, setting the stage for a lifelong commitment to military service.

In his military career, he ascended to the rank of Colonel and served as a jumpmaster paratrooper with the 101st Airborne. He honed his skills in jungle warfare at Panama and displayed exceptional courage during two tours of duty in Vietnam.

Colonel Ayers' impact extended beyond the battlefield, as he played a pivotal role in the integration of women into the military. He proudly graduated from both the U.S. Naval War College and U.S. Army War College, underscoring his unwavering commitment to continual learning and leadership.

Throughout his illustrious 30-year military career, he earned the prestigious Legion of Merit medal, alongside four bronze stars, exemplifying his competence and character. He leaves behind a legacy of honor, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to defense of the United States of America.

Thomas Ayers III was the eldest of ten siblings, born to John and Blanche Ayers. He cherished his role as a brother to John, Donald, Ronald, Russel, Jerry, Nancy, Charlie, Eddie, and Kathy Ayers. He was a devoted husband to Gail Bishop. Together, they had three children: Kevin Ayers, Lisa Ayers, and Mark Ayers, as well as two cherished grandchildren, Rebecca Ayers and Jameson Ayers. He also had two loving daughters-in-law, Cherie, and Debbie Ayers.

Colonel Thomas Ayers III leaves behind a legacy of honor, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to family and country.
