Anthony Mate Obituary

ANTHONY "TONY'' DAVID MATE SR. AUG. 13, 1952 - JULY 1, 2008 Tony passed away on July 1, 2008 in Waterford, Calif. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Diana of Waterford; sons, Anthony Jr., and Jason (Autumn) of Modesto, and Derek of Waterford; daughter, Sally of Atwater; mother, Helen Mate of Oakdale and four grandchildren, Katie, Emily, Tori and Robby; and Goddaughter, Michelle of Oakdale. He also leaves three brothers, Mike of Katy, Texas, Ronnie and Mannay of Oakdale; three sisters, Phyllis of Oakdale, Frankie of Iowa and Paulette of Virginia; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his father, Phillip Mate. He was an employee of Hershey Foods for 38 years and served in the US Navy during the Vietnam war. His ship, the USS Turner Joy fired the final rounds of the war, just as the cease-fire was called. Tony loved and adored his many friends and family, and will be sorely missed by all. Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 10 at Oakdale Memorial Chapel, with the viewing the day before; Wednesday, July 9 from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., at the chapel. There will be a "Celebration of Tony's Life'' immediately following the Thursday services at the Sportsman's Club in Oakdale. My brother Keith and myself attended the"Old Eastside School through Oakdale High School" with Tony and his brothers and sisters. Lots of years and memories. I was so sad to hear about Tony. I worked with him for many years at Hersheys and I will always remember his nice smile and him saying "Hey Porky" in that deep voice he had. My heart goes out to his wife and children. May you someday find peace in your memories of him.

I knew Tony Mate while I worked at the Hershey Oakdale Plant. I cannot ever remember seeing Tony without that beautiful smile. He was a kind man who would do anything he could to help. May God comfort the hearts of his family and many friends.
