Jerold A. Boberg
October 8, 1946 - November 19, 2013
Longtime Turlock resident Jerold A. Boberg died November 19 of complications from lung cancer. He was 67.
Jerry was born in Oakland, Calif., at the US Naval Hospital. He lived in Turlock for 36 years working for E&J Gallo Winery as a chemist, and was an avid member of the Stevinson Ranch Golf Club.
At the age of 8 Jerry's family moved from Oakland to Twain Harte where they owned and operated the Twain Harte Miniature Golf course, giving Jerry his start to a life-long love of golf.
During high school in Tuolumne, Jerry loved reading and excelled in academics and baseball. After graduating from Summerville High School in 1964 Jerry joined the US Navy, becoming a missile technician on a nuclear submarine. After 8 years in the Navy he went to college at Cal State Chico, earning Bachelor of Arts degrees in Chemistry and Mathematics.
Mr. Boberg's first and only job after college was with E&J Gallo Winery, where he was a chemist for most of his 26 years of employment, taking early retirement in 2003.
Jerry was most dedicated to golf and reading. A very active member of the Stevenson Ranch Golf Club, he played golf at least three times week. Jerry's love of reading drove him to amass a library of about 1000 collector-quality books of history and classical literature and 2000 paperbacks of contemporary fiction, which he donated to Cal State Stanislaus shortly before his death.
Mr. Boberg was single but spent nearly every Thanksgiving and Christmas with his family in his home town of Twain Harte.
Mr. Boberg is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Jacqueline Boberg, of Saratoga, California; brother-in-law Eric A. Carlson, of Twain Harte; nephews Keith Carlson, of San Jose, Ross Boberg, of New York City, and Alex Boberg, of Los Angeles; and numerous cousins and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin Boberg and Charlotte Leedom, in 2006; his brother, Lawrence Boberg, in 1991; and his sister Judy Carlson, in 2011.
Donations in memory may be made to the
American Lung Association,
American Cancer Society, or the Library at CSU Stanislaus. A memorial gathering of friends and relatives will be held at 2304 Seattle Ct., Turlock, 1-3 pm Sunday December 15th (contact: Rich Boberg at
