Modesto, California - Mary Dorothy Nelson passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family in Modesto on February 8, 2021. She was born in 1931 in the Bronx, a borough of New York City, NY, to Mark & Lena Marks; Mary was one of 10 siblings in the Marks family.
She was preceded in death by her husband Rudy Nelson and her beloved son Herman Costa. Mary is survived by her son Dan Costa (Denise) of Modesto, her son Mike Nelson (Shelly) of Modesto, Her Grandchildren Kelsie & Daniel Costa, Ava & Cash Nelson, great-grandchildren Grant Olson and Kariyah Costa.
Mary moved to Modesto, CA, at the age of 19; she had a sharp wit and a great sense of humor. She was an excellent chef and took great joy in feeding both family and friends to their delight. With a love of fashion and her keen sense of style, she will always be remembered as nothing less than classy and always impeccable. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Mary would often say her proudest accomplishments were her closest friends and her three sons.
As a devoted Catholic, she felt a deep connection with God. Her family finds comfort knowing that she is now at peace and in the presence of the Lord. Mary had a big heart and a love for her family. She will always remain in the hearts of all who loved her.

Mary has been our neighbor for many years. We were always greeted with a cheerful hello on the driveway as we met her.
Mary liked to share her food she prepared, even her special cabbage rolls and Rudy’s chili.
She paid lots of attention to our children and got many good laughs out of the crazy experiences of Mike and our son.
Thirty nine years ago our daughter wrote on her assignment in kindergarten, that Mary Nelson was her best friend and drew a picture of her. She definitely made an impression on our children.
She was a terrific mother to her sons, Dan, Herman and Mike.
We express our sympathy to them and her family whom she loved.
May the Good Lord comfort them!

While working at my second job at Macy’s I met Mary. We became instant friends. When she came in to shop it was my chance to take a break in her dressing room. I will
always remember our many years iof shopping, traveling to the Bay Area, and of course her favorite our trips to Black Oak. I will truly miss my dear friend. I’m so sorry for your loss.

She was kind and sweet, always there to visit.
She always looked beautiful.
