Michael John Gerber
1959-2014
Dr. Michael John Gerber, passionate about family, friends, dentistry, and farming, passed away on June 12, 2014. A native and lifelong resident of Modesto, Mike was born October 24, 1959 and attended Beyer High School, CSU Stanislaus, UC San Diego, and University of the Pacific School of Dentistry.
Mike's family was everything to him, with an enduring love for his wife Kelly and three children Nate, Maci, and Sam. He was active in his children's education, sports activities, dance recitals, and clubs, and his legacy will be felt in the way he taught them compassion and the value of hard work. Ranching was an important part of Mike's life, and will continue as the family cares for his successful orchards. Together, Mike and his family enjoyed boating, swimming, skiing, traveling, watching the sun rise, and gatherings with friends. He lived life to the fullest, diving (sea and sky), flying, swimming with the Modesto Area Aquatic Club and in the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.
Mike always managed to find time for his parents, Dr. James and Nell Gerber, and his siblings Jim, Karen Gerber Conrotto, Robert, Kimberly Gerber Spina, and Tom. Mike particularly enjoyed cutting roses from his garden for his mother, brightening the home of his parents as well as his office.
Mike was passionate about dentistry, inspired by his father James Gerber, DDS. His patients remember Mike's gentleness, personal interest, and perfectionism. He treated patients, assistants, and professional colleagues, including the groundskeepers with whom he shared coffee every morning, like family. From 1995-2001, Mike served on the Board of Directors of the Stanislaus Dental Association, was President in 2000, and was a longtime Chair of the Ethics Committee. He was a delegate to the California Dental Association, 1999-2001.
Also active in the community, Mike was past President and Life member of the Modesto "500" Lions Club, the recipient of a Melvin Jones Award, and of the first annual Robert Kriese Lionism Award for extraordinary humanitarian efforts in service to others.
Visitation hours at the Lakewood Funeral Home (900 Santa Fe Ave., Hughson) are Wednesday, June 18 from 4:00-8:00 pm. Testimonials can be submitted online to www.lakewoodhughson.com.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Big Valley Grace Community Church, 4040 Tully Road, Friday, June 20 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Mike's name to the American Cancer Society, Hospice Care, or YES (Youth Entertainment Stage) Company, 3920 Bluebird Drive Modesto, CA 95356.

It's been over three years Mike and me and my family still miss you. It doesn't seem like 25 years have passed since we met. You and I were two weeks apart in age, went through the major life changes in the 90's about the same time, got married and had kids just six months apart. I'm sure you are looking down upon your family and know how wonderful they are. Sam was in the paper recently for his Footloose performance and Mom called to tell me about it. She was so proud. I miss our conversations about brothers, orchards, marriage and kids. Until we see each other again.

I was a neighbor and a patient for many years and I learned of his passing just yesterday! I will always remember Mike's kindness and gentleness and his love for his wife and children. I remember when the first time he harvested walnuts from his farm and moved out of our neighborhood, he would bring us his neighbors buckets of walnuts at our front door. As a caring dentist he treated a brother of mine with a horrible abcess tooth and in pain on a sunday!! That's the Mike I know and my heart is full of sadness hearing about his passing. I was shocked when I found out. I have known Dr. Gerber since 1997, he was a great human being and an awesome doctor.I havent seen him in the last 7 years due to having a different insurance; a few months ago I got a different insurance that would have allowed me to see Dr. Gerber. He was the only reason I chose that insurance. I am jsut in disbelief...I called today to make an appt with him and I just found out. God bless you Dr Gerber, God bless all your family. Arriving at the pool and not seeing your pickup is jolting. I still expect you to stop by our lane for a quick chat. In total shock. Dr. Gerber was worth the drive. Finding an honest, caring punctual, dentist is not easy. He was such a role model for my son too. I never thought I would have to go anywhere else. My heart goes out to his family and staff too. I don't think I will ever understand how a picture of health and unbelievable humanitarian can leave us. The hour and a half it took to see him from the Bay Area was never an issue. My family would never consider going anywhere else. This is a huge loss for the community. We're so sad.

Dear Kelly, my heart keeps breaking every time I think of Mike. He was and will be, forever in my heart, one of the best people I have ever known. I will miss his beautiful smile and hello hug every time I saw him, his always needed advise and help in all that I was doing and not doing, and his unending friendship. I was flying out of state and upon turning phone back on received the devastating news of Dr. Mike. He took me on as a HYG Assistant after leaving all I'd ever known in Pediatric Dentistry. I was so happy in his Dental Family! He was so gracious and a gentle teacher for myself in the art of general dentistry. Not only did I get to arrange cupboards to my hearts galore and stock but I got to receive his precious roses on Monday morning and arrange them for the staff and patients to enjoy!! The big bowl for the lovely magnolia's was always a favorite. Mike you were so kind, generous, a loving family man, eclectic in all your passions and devoted to them all. Your family was always a bright light when they popped in the office. I'm so sad at the loss of a wonderful man. All of our family started with Mike's dad as our dentist and then Mike became our dentist. Mike brought me through some difficult procedures with my teeth and Mike always made me feel good about this. He was one of the kindest and caring person I have ever met. I can't express the sorrow I feel with the passing of this great man. I met Mike on his 30th birthday when I was sent to him due to "pain" in my face. I was very pregnant and feared X-rays, medication etc. He was so kind and took all the time needed to explain that the baby would not be in danger. He explained better and spent more time than my ONGYN. I continued to see him from that date forward, always enjoying our chats, he remembered everything we ever spoke of. I even peeked at my chart to see if he kept secrete notes... He hadn't.
To say Mike will be missed is an understatement!

I can't express how sorry and sad I am that Dr, Gerber has past. I saw his Dad before him and I don't believe my family and I will ever find a Dentist as kind and caring and as good as what he was to us ever again. I remember him always asking me how I was and never once heard him complain about anything in his life. Mike was my dentist for 16 years, recommended by a fellow patient and former neighbor of his. I will always remember his perpetually sunny outlook, his enthusiasm, and joie de vivre. Remembrance…
It was Granlibakken! High Sierra, North Shore Lake Tahoe is where it happened. We, dental study club professionals of Modesto, would gather in a spirit to improve ourselves for the betterment of patient care in our practices. That's where I realized the true grit of Michael Gerber so many years ago. The group banded together like brothers and sisters to become a professional family of higher learning. Michael always contributed in his, you know, his special way with that bright enthusiastic and genuine way of caring. All of our young families gathered round the old hotel fireplace to share our lives in winter, … it was Granlibakken!

I am completely devastated of learning of of Dr. Mike's passing. I always had the greatest respect and admiration for him.He brought sunshine and smiles to everyone. He was truly infectious with his wonderful smiling personality. He lifted your spirit just being around him. I was referred to Dr. Mike, and was completely fearful of dentists . He made me totally at ease , and to never fear the dentist again. I will always treasure his kindness, caring and excellent dental care that he extended to my daughter and I. I will never forget after my daughter passed at 19, the lovely flowers and card from him. On my first visit after her passing, I was touched by Dr.Mike's geniune compassion for me, and was truly emotional trying to be strong for me after suffering such a loss. He always was geniune when asking about how you were doing and holding up in life. To this day, I have never had the joy of being in the presence of someone so gracious, caring ,and compassionate . A few times, when times were tough for me financially, he would just tell me dont worry about it, or give me what I needed and never charge.I will never forget that kindness, and the gentleness of the wonderful Dr.Mike. Our family is deeply sad to hear that Dr. Gerber passed away. I started my first job in Modesto as dental assistant in Dr. James Gerber's office for one summer. I saw how much he cared for his patients that after I moved to a diffrent job I stayed as his patient. When Dr. Michael took over the office I told him he has a very big shoe to fill. But he was as good as his dad if not better. Dr. Gerber was our family dentist for the past 37 years and a good friend. He was so kind and caring. Everyone hates to go to dentist but I am sure all Dr. Gerber's patients looked forward to their visits to his office and seeing his beautiful and kind smile. Our community has lost an amazing dentist and truly a wonderful man. Our prayers and thoughts are with his family.

I am so very sorry to hear of Dr. Mike's passing. I always had the greatest respect for him, his practice, and all the family. So many fond memories during the so many years ago that I worked in same office building on Orangeburg with his Dad and Mom and then later when Dr. Mike started his practice there also. He brought sunshine and smiles to everyone. He was truly infectious with his wonderful smiling personality. He lifted your spirit just being around him. Later, when he moved to the office on Coffee, he took such good care of my Mother's dental care. I shall always treasure his kindness, caring and excellent dental care that he extended to her. Our daughter Minnde and her family have been patients for years and also so saddened in hearing of Dr. Mike's passing. Even though I haven't seen him in years, he always asked about me.

I will always treasure the memory of Mike. Besides being an awesome dentist, he was a true friend that loved life and his family. I will always remember Mike as one of the super coolest guys ever, always had that friendly grin, the grin of a happy man!
In and out of dental school his sidekick Herb, they were inseparable, never saw one without the other.
It is a surprise to learn of his passing, just reconnected at our 25th reunion last year. There he was with Herb! (Oh, and their wives, of course!)

When I was little and was taken to the dentist, I was slapped by the dentist because I cried. I was terrified as an adult to have anything done by a dentist. Then came Dr. Gerber. At the age of 50, I had my first cavity. Dr. Gerber was so gentle, patient, caring during the filling. He spoke so softly to me to make sure I was okay and even stopped to wipe a tear from my cheek. He patted my white knuckled hand and before I knew it my tooth was filled. He changed my mind about dentists. I will NEVER forget him and what a wonderful man he was.
