Harry Lourand Mathews, Sr., 85, passed away on September 3, 2016, at his home in Seaside, California, surrounded by his family and his loving wife of 62 years, Yung Ai. Harry was born on May 11, 1931 in Clarksdale, Mississippi to Maggie and Willie Mathews, Sr. He grew up in Memphis, Tennessee with his 13 brothers and sisters and graduated from Manassas High School. He joined the Army and served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. While in Korea, Harry met and married the love of his life, Yung Ai Yang, in 1954. They shared their lives together, had eleven children, and settled in Seaside where Harry built their home and started his business, Mathews Electric. He went on to work as Chief Electrician and Supervisor of Maintenance for the Department of Corrections.
Harry will be remembered for his dedication to his wife and family, his many talents, his generosity, his boundless energy, and his unwavering enthusiasm for life. Harry was preceded in death by his son James Ricardo Mathews and is survived by his wife, Yung Ai, "Betty" Mathews; his children, Kyung Sue Howard (Lowell), Eddeanor Searby, Harry Mathews, Jr. (Cheryl), Linda Mathews, Rosemary Mathews, Clay Mathews, Sr. (Lisa), Diana Davis (Lance), Sophia Clemmons, Susan Rivera (John), Tony Mathews, and Marriah Mathews. Harry will be missed by his 40 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren and his sisters, brother, nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Fort Ord Main Chapel on Saturday, September 17 at 1pm, with Visitation on Friday, September 16 from 5pm-8pm at Mission Memorial Park in Seaside, California.

To The Mathews Family,

Mr Mathews did a lot great things not only for the City of Seaside but for the Monterey Peninsula. His contributions will always be appreciated it.
I stopped by the house 2 months ago, & was able to talk to Mr Mathews for a little while. Glad I did that.

Daddy, you were hero to many, especially to my children & I . You continued to give & love to the very end. Patrick loved being around you as you were like a father to him to the very day he passed away.. Harry Mathews was a husband, a father, grandfather, brother a friend, a man of faith. He was a defender of those in need as well as a fighter, a brilliant, talented kindhearted man and someone I can honestly say taught many things about life. Harry was one of the sweetest and kindness friend, inside and out, was a wonderful friend to me. Knowing Harry for over 25 years especially his gentle and caring nature. I always admired how he would never judge or force his opinions on anyone, but offered valuable and truthful advice that I will surely miss. He was a vibrant soul, one who literally lit up the room whenever he entered. He was was full of joy and always eager to help out, no matter what the problem was and no matter how busy he was he made time and always very cheerful and full of jokes. He was always energetic and full of life. My lasting memories of Mr. Harry Mathews (Sweetheart ) are simple: a hard-working, passionate figure of strength and all the love for his wife Yung (Mamma) as well as his family as well as friends and all those who soldiered on, even when times were tough. Thank you Harry for being such a wonderful friend. You are and will be truly missed. My most sincere and heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Mathews and family.
