My condolences to the Brittain and Matthews families. I had the honor and privilege of being a student under History Professor Joseph Brittain at Alabama State University, in 1958 and 1961. He and Dr. L. D. Riddick, selected me and one other History Major to travel to a National History conference in Richmond, VA. It was during the long drives, to and fro, that I learned of the depth of character and the humanity of this scholarly man. His first loves and conversations were about his children, his wife and his mother, who lived in Winder, GA. Upon our return drive to Montgomery at four o'clock a.m., he elected to drive forty miles off of our travel route... U.S. 29, so that he could drop in for five minutes to call on his aging mother. I never forgot that human gesture. His humane legacy was vested in his daughters. Josetta was a special daughter to him. May she rest in peace.

To the Mathews-Brittain Family,
It is with great sorrow that we were not able to join
our Soror once again prior to her passing. JoAnn Grady, Linda Hardaway, Josetta and I joined Alpha Kappa Alpha at Indiana Univerisity, Bloomington, IN together in 1964. Though we continued our iives in different directions and different cities, we had this lasting bond. I was able to speak with her for a few minutes several months ago. though she was very ill, she was positive about her illness. I will always cherish that conversation and for that I am grateful.
To the Family, Know that God is Good All the Time. Blessed be the name of the Lord.
