David Arnold Obituary

David Arnold David William Arnold, 84, of Gwynedd, who had a lifetime career in sales and marketing, died of a stroke Thursday. A big man with an even bigger heart, "Dave" connected with everyone he met, instantly converting the stranger to a friend. His sometimes gruff exterior belied a generous, sentimental and caring father and husband, whose spirited personality and humor was infectious. He was a US Marine and an All Southern college football player, with a love of history, cartooning, sculpture and poetry. He ran the Marine Corps marathon in his fifties, learned to fly glider planes in his sixties, and discovered and fell in love with golf in his seventies. A forty-four year resident of the Philadelphia area, Mr. Arnold was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, where he attended the Marist School, and Georgia Tech University. After enlisting in the Marine Corps and serving in the Korean War, he earned a BA at St. Michael's college in Vermont, where he met his wife of 55 years, Susanna. An indefatigable salesman, Mr. Arnold landed and deftly maintained accounts until he was eighty, in the paper products division of Weyerhaeuser; as National Accounts Sales Manager for the Eastex division of Time Life Corp, in North Wales, PA; and most recently as Director of New Business Development for Acculogix, Inc. in Bristol, PA. His years on the road made him an authority on where get the best hot dogs and barbeque up and down the Atlantic seaboard, and his work also brought him to places as far flung as Beirut, Zurich and Singapore. When he retired in 2009, he continued to set the alarm clock, driving in the early morning hours to the Philadelphia Airport USO to sweep floors, cook eggs and talk with returning troops. Mr. Arnold is survived by his wife, Susanna, son, Peter, daughter Elizabeth, three grandchildren Jack, Bea and Lily, four nieces and three nephews. The joy, love and respect he had for his family and many friends endures. A tribute to his life will be held 11:00 am October 15, at Foulkeways Retirement Community. Contributions may be made to the Philadelphia Airport USO. www.libertyuso.org.
