David Daniel Obituary

David M. Daniel

October 7, 1943 - September 20, 2022

On Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, David M. Daniel, passed away peacefully in Portland, Ore., at age 78.

David was born Oct. 7, 1943, in Jackson, Tenn., to Daisy and Eugene Daniel. The family moved to Grand Blanc, Mich., in 1953. After graduating from high school, Dave joined the U.S. Air Force and served overseas at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany.

Following the Air Force, he graduated from Kendall School of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Mich., with a degree in furniture design. He moved to High Point in 1968 where he met Pamela Martin, his wife of 54 years. In High Point, he began designing furniture for Heritage, then moved to Morganton in 1972 when Drexel and Heritage Furniture companies merged. He spent the majority of his life in Morganton and five-decade design career primarily designing for Drexel Heritage and Thomasville. For many years, he had his own company, David Daniel Design, and did freelance work for a variety of furniture companies.

Dave was a member of the International Society of Furniture Designers and was a Pinnacle Award winner for outstanding contributions to the furniture design industry. He was also recognized as a distinguished alumnus from Kendall School of Art and Design.

Dave was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, serving as Deacon and Elder. Throughout his life, he enjoyed hiking, fly fishing, canoeing, cycling, and camping in the mountains of Western North Carolina with his outdoor group of friends. He was very active in the local art community and served as president of the Burke Arts Council.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Gary Daniel.

He is survived by his wife, Pamela M. Daniel; sister, Dianna Reichart (Dieter); daughters, Kerry Daniel-McGurk (Dy), Sara Bodnar (Jànos); and granddaughters, Elia, Addison, and Norah Bodnar. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, and many lifelong friends.

Dave and Pam moved to Portland, Ore., a year ago to be closer to family, but still consider Morganton their home.

Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Morganton at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, in the Sanctuary. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall, following the service.

Donations can be made to First Presbyterian Church of Morganton or to the Burke Arts Council in David's name.

I received late notice of David's passing. My wife and I are so sorry for this family's great loss. Ever since finding out of his passing, Pam, the girls, and the grandchildren has very much been in our thoughts.
