John J. Burns

Amherst Twp â€" John J. Burns, 91, passed away on Monday, October 23, 2023.John was born and raised in Lorain, Ohio on December 17, 1931 to his parents, James and Rosiland Burns. He graduated from Lorain St. Mary's Academy, Class of 1950. John enlisted in the U.S. Army in January of 1952, serving in the Korean War and he was honorably discharged in December of 1953. He met Patricia Amato in 1954 and they were married on April 30, 1955, raising their four children together. He worked at B.F. Goodrich where he was a maintenance mechanic prior to his retirement and in his younger years he worked at Calvary Cemetery and the Shipyards. John enjoyed canning his peppers from his garden, he loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was a member of St. Mary Church in Lorain, VFW Post # 1662 in Amherst, I.A.V. Post 1 in Lorain, and the American Legion Post 118 in Amherst. He took special interest in sports, especially coaching his 3 sons and many others from CYO football at St. Mary's to High School freshman basketball. He was a coach and mentor to many.He is survived by his children, Larry (Olivia) Burns, Dan (Cindy) Burns, John Burns and Jeanie; sister, Joan Peinoski; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-granchildren.He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Patricia G. (nee Amato) Burns in 2010; parents, James and Rosiland (nee Halm) Burns; sisters, Celine Rumpler and Mary Alice Wagner; and brothers, James, Charles, and Dave Burns and their spouses.The family will receive friends at Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home, 2150 Broadway, Lorain, (440) 244-1961 on Friday, October 27, 2023 from 3:00 - 7:00 PM. Closing prayers will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 9:20 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, October 28, 2023 at St. Mary's Church, 310 8th Street, Lorain, OH 44052, Fr. Daniel O. Divis, Pastor, officiating. Christian burial services will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain, OH with honors. Memorial donations may be made in John's memory to St. Mary's Church in Lorain.
