Mrs. Helen Smith Tate, age 92 of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 17, 2014 at Forest Heights. Mrs. Tate was born in Surry County on November 18, 1921 to the late Roscoe and Maggie Boyd Smith. She retired from Spencer's, Inc. Mrs. Tate is survived by daughter, Gaye Hennis of Winston Salem, NC and Tom Hennis of Mount Airy; son, Ray Tate of Durham, NC and Mary Tate of Durham, NC. She leaves four grandchildren, Todd Hennis of Raleigh, Susan Hennis Uppena and Rob of Raleigh, NC, Chris Tate and Heidi of Asheville, NC, Chad Tate of Raleigh and Faith Tate of Durham, NC; nine great grandchildren, Scott Hennis and Holly, Anna Kate and Lilly Uppena of Raleigh, Tyler and Jesse Tate of Raleigh, Baret, Lucas and Lilly Tate of Asheville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Stewart and Harriet Smith, Gene and Betty Smith all of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, brothers and sisters, Mrs. Tate was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. "Tobe" Tate. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, November 20, 2014 at Salem United Methodist Church with Rev. Dennis "Bud" Cameron officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Community Hospice, 2205 Davie Ave., Statesville, NC 28677. The family would like to express a special thanks to hospice staff, Hailey Drum and April Ayers and also, their sincere appreciation to the caregivers, Kim, Bryan and Sandra McCullough for their kindness, love and support.
