Dorothy Jean Haggett Peterson

Dorothy Jean Haggett Peterson was born May 23, 1934 in Pocatello, ID to Charles W. and Dorothy E. Haggett. She was second of 3 children.

At age 8 her family moved to West Yellowstone where she attended grade school. The family had a cabin on Hebgen Lake, a place she always held dear with many wonderful memories. It is where her family spent their free time when they were able to get away from their store in town. Dorothy always credited working in that store for giving her confidence and responsibility. She was always able to start up a conversation with anyone who came along. She never met a stranger. Dorothy began high school in Bozeman where she was boarded out with a family during the week, and then caught a ride to and from home with the Darigold milk truck. Her final two years of school were spent in Ennis when the family moved to Virginia City.

During her time in Virginia City she became interested in shooting and was recognized for her marksmanship as she killed the largest mule deer buck in Madison County her senior year of high school. Upon graduating high school she enrolled in Dillon Normal School where she earned a teaching certificate. She moved back home and accepted a teaching position in Laurin. She was responsible for all eight grades. She enjoyed her work and was always pleased when she encountered former students throughout the years.

Teaching in Laurin would turn out to be a life changing experience for her. One of the school board members, who happened to be a bachelor, took notice, and a lifelong love affair began. Dorothy married Joe Peterson on October 15, 1955. They eloped with the only limiting factor being that Joe had to be home for fall roundup. Thus began her new life as a ranch wife. Joe and Dorothy were married for 47 years. They lived and raised their family on the ranch in the Upper Ruby until semi retiring in 1988 and moving to Sheridan.

Dorothy was glad to be in town and was able to participate in more of the things that weren't practical living on the ranch. She was a strong Christian and was an active participant in her church and bible studies. She belonged to the Hospital Foundation and the Nursing Home Board. She was recognized for her longevity as a member of the Madison County Election Board. She was also an avid supporter of the pool. Anyone using the Sheridan pool at some point probably met Dorothy there doing laps.

Dorothy is pre-deceased by her parents, her sister Joanne Wiseman, and husband Joe. Survivors include her brother, Herb Haggett; daughters: Connie Peterson, Emily (Tony) Simonsen; son, Bruce (Julie) Peterson; eight grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

Celebration of life will be held on Friday, September 23 at 10:30 at Mountain View Chapel in Twin Bridges with graveside services in Nevada City. A reception will follow at the Alder Community Center. Memorials may be made to the Ruby Valley Swimming Pool.
