James Straine Obituary

James J. Straine

AGE: 75 • Haig Point, Daufuskie Island, SC,

formerly of Warren, NJ

James J. Straine, 75, of Haig Point, Daufuskie Island, South Carolina, formerly of Warren, New Jersey, passed away on October 5, 2017 after a brave, yet quick battle with cancer. Jim was born on November 12, 1941 to Ann (Doyle) and Charlie Straine in Philadelphia. Soon after the family moved to Ambler, Pennsylvania where he grew up and made life long friends (along with being the Ambler Yo-Yo Champion). Jim graduated from La Salle College and served in the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. Jim married his high school sweetheart, Mary, in October of 1963 and began a successful 34 year career at Prudential. Jim began as a Human Resource Manager and retired in 2000 as the Assistant Treasurer of Prudential. Jim and Mary were fortunate to live in Luxembourg from 1989-1993 while Jim was CEO of PRICOA Bank.

Jim and Mary lived in the Philadelphia area and moved to Warren, NJ in 1976 where they raised their five children. Jim coached his children's sports, taught CCD and was a Pre Cana leader for many years at Our Lady of the Mount Church in Warren. In 2004, Jim and Mary moved full time to Haig Point on Daufuskie Island in South Carolina. It was paradise for them. While at Haig Point, Jim was involved in various committees and groups. Jim and Mary monitored the Blue Bird trail at Haig Point for many years, and Jim took over when Mary could no longer participate. Jim was known for organizing his "Straine Golf Group" that played every Wednesday and Friday morning. Everyone at Haig Point loved Jim and he will be deeply missed on the Island.

Jim loved to golf, read, travel, play cards, go to mass, watch his grandchildren do anything, and be with family and friends who loved nothing more than being with him. His faith and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Jim is predeceased by his wife Mary who passed away just seven weeks earlier, his son Jimmy who was killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and his sister Helen.

Jim is survived by his children, Michael (Colleen), Katy (Bernie), Kevin (Erin), Daniel (Erin), daughter-in-law, Trish Straine Mac Gregor and 16 grandchildren: Finn, Charlie, Declan, Adele, Dugan, James, Catie, Keagan, Quinn, Ryan, Patrick, Hugh, Duncan, Ennis, Cora and Emma. He is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. Jim will be missed at the annual gathering of friends and family for the Jimmy Straine Invitational. He loved seeing everyone and honoring Jimmy. Affectionately known as O.M.S. to a great group of his sons friends who will miss him dearly.

A memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of the Mount Church in Warren, NJ on Friday October 20 at 10:30 am.

Whether it's 20 years ago (9/11) or four years (10/5) it seems like only yesterday. Grief is the price we pay for love.

Attempting to send Jim a "Happy Birthday" wish on Facebook, I realized that Mary had passed away in August and Jim in October! My brother, Jack attended LaSalle with Jim and they both were stationed at Fr. Sill. I am shocked and so saddened by this news. My wife Pat and I will remember Jim, Mary and their family in our prayers. I am so sorry...there are no words.

Mr and Mrs Straine were clients of the Greenery and I was fortunate enough to have known them both.
