Leona G. Adams

AGE: 90 • Scotch Plains

Leona G. Adams, 90, passed Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center Somerset. Born in Baltimore, she was a longtime resident of Scotch Plains, NJ. A native of Baltimore, Md., she was active in both music and church activities. As a child, she performed piano on children's radio and Uncle's George's Club, broadcasting from the New Theater over WBFR, Baltimore. She was also active in Job's Daughters. As a young woman, she worked as an engineering secretary for Bendix Radio, where she met her husband of 65 years, James. During the cold war, she volunteered with the Ground Observer Corps, an arm of the United States Air Force Civil Defense network, which provided aircraft tracking with over 200,000 civilian volunteers. As a soprano, Mrs. Adams has sung in professional choirs or as a soloist for over 40 years including Crescent Ave. Presbyterian Church of Plainfield, Old First Church of Newark, Central Presbyterian Church of Summit, Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church, The Choral Art Society of Westfield, the Ed Cole Singers, and the Master Choral of R.V.C.C. As president of the Women's Society of Central Presbyterian Church in Summit, she served for 7 years on the Elizabeth Presbytery Board, attending numerous Synod, Synodical Schools, and three Triennium conferences at Purdue University, receiving a UPC USA certificate of recognition for Christian Service in 1981. At Crescent Ave. Presbyterian Church, she served on the Board of Deacons, Session, 20-year director of the children's choir, President of the Adult Fellowship, and founder of the Crescent Angels. Mrs. Adams was also president of the Fortnightly Club of Summit, NJ, a club dedicated to volunteerism, fundraising, and community service.

She was predeceased by her husband, James B. Adams, Jr. (2010) and is survived by her son James G. "Skip" Adams and two grandsons, Jonathan and Zachary.

Visitation will be at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave., Fanwood on Monday, November 10 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Services will be held at the Bound Brook Presbyterian Church 409 Mountain Ave., Bound Brook, on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Greenwich Cemetery.
