Jacksonville - Dennis C. Hammer, 71, of rural Jacksonville, died Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at his residence. He was born April 20, 1953, in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Frederick H. and Florence Mae Wise Hammer. Dennis married Jackie Kay Elliott on June 23, 1979, and she preceded him in death on November 15, 2009. He married Denise "Dee" Box on September 10, 2011, and she survives.
Dennis is also survived by his son, Trenton Elliott of Chester, daughter, Nichole (Ryan) Dyer of Jacksonville; four grandchildren, Caleb, Patience, Alicyn, and Kynlee; one niece, Maria (Jerry) Martinez of Texas, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Ellen.
Dennis was a self-employed grave digger for over 35 years, serving numerous cemeteries in west Central Illinois. In addition, Dennis worked with several local plumbers and contractors doing trenching and backhoe work. He enjoyed trapping, hunting, and fishing and was a fan of Fighting Illini Basketball and NASCAR, especially Kyle Busch. Dennis especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, August 19, 2024, at Williamson Funeral Home. The family will meet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Gentiva Hospice or the family. Condolences may be left online at www.airsman-hires.com.
