Andreas V. Meyer ("Chef Andre") of Bedford, NH, died on September 30, 2017 at Community Hospice House in Merrimack, NH. He was 77 years old. After successfully fighting multiple rounds of cancer for the past 27 years, Andre peacefully passed away of natural causes with family by his side. He was able to relay his love for his family, with that extraordinary Swiss accent adored by all, until the very end. Born and raised near Bern, Switzerland, he was an accomplished chef and restauranteur. He came to the United States in 1964 to work at the Swiss Pavilion at the World's Fair in New York City where he met his wife, Maria Therese Durrer (Maria), also from Switzerland. After the World's Fair they moved to Waterville Valley, NH, where they operated Fourways Restaurant and the White Mountain Conference Center. After relocating to southern New Hampshire, they owned and operated the Café Swiss Restaurant in Merrimack and the Greenhouse Café in Amherst until 2003. Andre is predeceased by Maria who passed away on August 21, 2016. He is survived by his son Andreas Jr. of Francestown, his wife Katherine and their daughter Campbell Elaine Meyer, his son Eric and wife Jennifer of Windham and their daughter Vivian. Both Campbell and Vivian brought Andre incredible joy and he was an amazing and loving "Grossvatti" to both of them. Andre is also survived by his very dear sister-in-law and her husband, Helene and Michael Paquin of Framingham, MA, as well as one brother and two sisters in Switzerland and many nephews, nieces and cousins in both Switzerland and the United States. He is also predeceased by two brothers. As an exceptional chef and caterer, Andre was responsible for arranging some remarkable events including a Memorial Dinner honoring Robert Kennedy at the home of Ethel Kennedy in Hickory Hill, Virginia; a 700-guest birthday dinner for Bob Hope at Boston College and major fundraising events for past Presidents Bill Clinton and Georg H. Bush. Andre was beloved and extremely popular with customers, his staff and friends. He brought a positive attitude, a whistle and a smile to his work and inspired many of his younger staff to great successes in the restaurant profession. He loved traveling, especially to Switzerland to visit family and friends and hunting with his sons and companions. Most of all, he loved social gatherings with friends and family and until fairly recently continued to prepare wonderful meals for their pleasure and enjoyment. He was a member of several professional associations including La Chaine des Rotisseurs, Les Amis d'Escoffier Society, the American and New Hampshire Culinary Federations and the Souhegan Valley Associates. In lieu of flowers, donations in Andre's memory may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston or the Community Hospice House, 210 Naticook Road, Merrimack, NH 03054. SERVICES: A gathering will take place this Thursday October 5th, from 4:00-8:00pm at the Cremation Society of New Hampshire, 243 Hanover Street, Manchester, NH 03104, where relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects. A private burial will be held at a later date in Waterville Valley. The Meyer family would like to publicly express their thanks to the medical community and friends who have supported both Andre and Maria over the past several years.

I am so sad that the world has lost a beautiful person. I kept in touch with Andre meeting him for dinners and well crafted meals at his home in Bedford with Maria the last few years. I spoke with him a couple weeks prior to his passing. He remained very private about his illness and insisted I not come up to see him. Not hearing from him as I usually do during the holidays, I googled him and am stunned and saddend. He was my mentor as I pursued a successful career in the Hospitality Business. He touched so many people. God Bless and Love you Andre. Gary & Paula Elsmore

I had the pleasure of meeting Andreas here in Panama City Beach when he was staying here for the winter last year. I gave him a ride to a few medical appointments and was able to help him in a couple other areas while preparing to go back home to New Hampshire. In a very short time I considered him a friend and almost family. I spoke to him several times since he was back home and in September when he said he was going to the hospital. I haven't been able to reach him the past few weeks on his cell phone so I decided to google his name and saw the sad news. May you rest in peace with your loving wife and I thank God for having known you for even a short time in my life. God Bless you Andreas. You accomplishments were many. I will miss you! With Loving Thoughts, Your friend Patty Subjek

Very sorry to see this news. I worked for Andreas and Maria from 1973-1975 at the Fourways and the Finish Line. Andreas gave me my first job out of college - as a dishwasher and I ended up working for Maria in the dining room as a waiter and host.
I also babysat occasionally for little Andre and Eric. I have only the fondest memories of Andreas and Maria who set the highest standards of service. For years I've been telling the same Andreas stories, to great laughter, of Andreas and his misplaced modifiers when speaking English. My two favorites were "Rick, shovel me off the roof" and "Rick, throw me down the stairs, a box". I also learned some great Swiss German curse words when a waitress would drop a loaded tray.
My sincerest condolences to you boys and to Helene who I also worked with. Andreas was the real giant !

I am so sorry for your loss. Andreas and Maria were good friends and neighbors in our later years. I cannot add much to what has already been said about their passing. Unfortuntely we have not been in touch in our later years, but my sympathy goes out to the family. You have a beautiful tribute to their memory.

Rest in Peace, Andre. God knows you certainly deserve rest. Though his passing leaves a hole in the hearts of all those who knew him, his struggles are over. He was an amazingly hard worker. That drive and expected perfection built successful businesses, as his smile and personality built lasting friendships. I learned a lot from Andre in the 17 years we worked together. My heart goes out to the family for your great loss.

Dear Meyer Family,
I am sorry for your loss, Andreas and Maria have also been a special boss, friend and mentor , He was such a dynamic man and had a great zest for life that he inspired all of us to great achievement. He will always have a special place in our heart. I am happy that he is with Maria as he told me how much he misses her and he did not like being alone. I am glad he went to Switzerland with Campbell. I wished i got to see him as I had arranged with Andre to visit in October. But I am happy he is finally free of pain and in a better place.
