Obituary
Anne Carter Manning, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, 81, passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2022 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Clyde Cass Carter and Anne Saunders Carter of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Mrs. Manning was the widow of the Honorable Samuel Phillips Manning. She is survived by two children, son, Samuel Phillips Manning, Jr of Lexington, South Carolina and daughter, Carter Manning Wade, of Raleigh, North Carolina. She is survived by two grandchildren, grandson, John William (Will) Wade, Jr. and wife, Alexis, of Kingsport, Tennessee and granddaughter, Allston Peyre Wade, of Bristol, Tennessee.
Mrs. Manning attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a member of Tri Delta Sorority. She also attended Ecole du Lourvre and the Sorbonne in Paris, France, and New York University.
She was active in the Spartanburg community. She served on the board of the Red Cross, former President of the Friends of the Arts, former President of the Ballet Guild and life board member. In addition, she belonged to the Assembly, was former Chairman of the Colonial Dames of South Carolina, Spartanburg Chapter and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of the Daughters of the Cincinnati and the Jamestowne Society. Additionally, Mrs. Manning was active in many clubs; Fortnightly, Fruit and Flowers Garden Club, Tea and Topics Book Club, Second Tuesday Book Club and Wednesday Study Club. She enjoyed working in her garden, reading and the company of her friends.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, December 1, 2022 at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, 141 Advent Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302, conducted by The Rev. Paula Griffin. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
