Elizabeth Rose Allen was born on December 9, 1929 to Perley and Catherine (White) Shurtliff in Theresa, New York. When Betty was four years old, she moved with her parents to Des Moines, Iowa where she was raised and attended school. During her sophomore year in high school, she again moved with her parents to Pipestone, Minnesota. After her graduation from Pipestone High School in 1948, she began working in the office of the Peavey Elevator. On June 7, 1953, she was united in marriage to Carlton "Louie" Allen at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Pipestone. Following their marriage, they lived in Pipestone and Betty continued to work at the elevator. After her son was born, she remained at home raising their two children. On May 17, 2014, Louie preceded her in death. Betty entered the care of the Good Samaritan Society in Pipestone and passed away peacefully there on Monday, January 13, 2025 at the age of 95.

Betty was raised in the Episcopal Church. She was a faithful member of St. Paul Episcopal Church in Pipestone until the time of its closing. When she was younger, she enjoyed being on a bowling league. She loved to watch TV, especially "The Young and the Restless." Her favorite times were spent visiting the casino. She also enjoyed visiting with the people at the American Legion.

She is lovingly remembered by her two children, Randy (Twyla) Allen and Rhonda Schumann, both of Pipestone, Minnesota; one grandson, Cory (Shari) Schumann of Pipestone, Minnesota; one granddaughter, Jennifer Fischer of Audubon, Iowa; five great-grandchildren, Austin Edmundson (Kolbie Benson), Trevor Schumann (Jada Wiese) and Jada Schumann, Zachary Grimes, and Devin Fischer; and three great-great-grandchildren, Karly, Skyler, and Alaina Edmundson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louie; her parents; and her cat, Dusty.
