Donna Kathleen Brockish passed away peacefully at Stormont Vail hospital at 8:05 PM on Oct. 24. She had been on life support for several days after sustaining critical internal injuries.
Donna was a pillar of the local community for 81 years, living her entire life in the St. Mary’s area. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1961. After high school, she worked briefly for the airlines, before running the storefront of St. Mary’s Plumbing & Supply, then later opening Discount Sportwear, both businesses in downtown St. Mary’s.
She married Kenneth Brockish on February 20, 1963. Ken built their first house on Walnut Street where they lived from 1967-1996, then purchased 14.5 acres North of St. Mary’s where she lived from 1996-2024. This property was her pride and joy. She enjoyed decorating, planting flowers and trees and always kept the house, yard and out-buildings in miraculous shape. Donna and Ken could be seen working tirelessly on their “Full Count Ranch” as cars drove by on Doyle Creek Road. Donna was very crafty and always full of energy. She loved Kansas basketball as well as watching her son play and coach college baseball. She also had a huge passion for animals. Donna (and Ken) owned cows, chickens, geese, ducks, horses and of course her beloved Schnauzers: Scooter, Winston and Colton. She often put their pictures on greeting cards for the various holidays throughout the year.
She is survived by her son Therron (Kelly) Brockish (Phoenix, AZ), grandchildren Alex (Casey) Lownes (Phoenix, AZ) and Lauren Berrington (Las Cruces, NM), brother Marvin W. (Beth) Gideon (St. Mary’s) and Thomas L. (Georgiana) Gideon (Topeka, KS), as well as nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband Kenneth (1937-2022), Father Thomas I. Gideon (1920-1996) and Mother Ramona (Klein) Gideon (1921-2005).
A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 27th from 1:00-3:00 pm at Piper Funeral Home in St Marys. A private burial will take place in Valley View Cemetery in St Mary’s.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ken Brockish Memorial Baseball Scholarship Fund and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home.
