With a heavy heart and yet an unspeakable joy, I write this obituary to honor and celebrate the life of my father, George Robinson, born on May 6th, 1941, in New Castle, Australia who passed away on July 10th, 2023. George, fondly known as 'ya ole Coot' or 'Matey' by his friends, was an epitome of charisma, wit, and compassion, whose generous spirit shone through in his interactions with people and his love for God.
George was a man of faith, who loved Jesus and the Bible. One of his favorite verses, John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life," was a testament to his belief in the power of love, grace, and redemption. His love for the scripture was evident in his hobbies; he loved to read the Bible and write sermons. He was in the midst of writing his memoir, encapsulating his journey of faith and experiences. He served as a pastor for many years, sharing his love for the Lord and praying for people. Even when he was not serving professionally, he would often visit hospitals to share words of encouragement and hope.
George was a man of many talents and interests. He loved to sing hymns and play his guitar. His love for music also extended to the tunes of Johnny Cash and the Everly Brothers. He was also an avid football enthusiast, a love he discovered when he moved to the U.S. in the 70's. He was a staunch supporter of Tom Landry and The Dallas Cowboys, and football soon became a predominant sport in our home. George moved back to Australia in the mid-nineties where he was able to spend time with his family there, get reacquainted with old friends and make new ones. He loved 'walk abouts' which included his favorite – New Castle Beach. He continued this 'tradition' when moving back to the US once retired in 2014, walking anywhere he could find a trail. He was energetic, and despite not being academically inclined, George's charisma and determination led him to retire from two different companies located in two different continents. His contributions at both were appreciated, and he received numerous accolades and awards for his work in sales and as an electrician.
George had an infectious smile and an innate ability to spread joy around him. He loved to joke around, visit people, and engage in hearty conversations. A true gentleman, he would always extend a warm handshake to men and a comforting hug to women, referring to them as 'dear' or 'love.' He loved going to IHop and the wide array of individuals he met there. His life story could make for a brilliant read, embodying his unique charm, resilience, and faith. Survived by his daughter, Lucy Rovny, and all those embraced by his hugs or warm smile, George's legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His life was not without its struggles, but as he would often say, he was redeemed. While we mourn his absence here on earth, we find comfort in knowing that he now rests with our Lord, probably asking Tom Landry about The Boys' current situation or singing praises with his guitar in hand. We invite you to share your memories, stories, and photographs of George on his memorial page. It would be a beautiful testament to his life and the countless lives he touched. Each memory shared would add a chapter to his incredible life story and help keep his spirit alive in our hearts.
