Gurdev Singh, 75, passed on Friday, July 26, 2013, at his home with his family in Oviedo, Florida.
LIFE
Gurdev was born on August 24, 1937, in Rupar, India to Chatar Singh and Sarup Kaur. His father was a magistrate in the state of Punjab. When Gurdev was 7 years old, his mother died in childbirth at the age of 29. He and his twin brother (Ranbir) were raised by their maternal aunt. Gurdev had 5 brothers and 3 sisters.
Gurdev earned his electrical engineering degree at Guru Nanak Engineering College in Ludhiana, India in 1961. He graduated first in the inaugural class of the College. His first job was as a Sub-divisional Officer for the Electrical Department of the city of Samrala. In 1963, he was hired by Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) as a Technology Engineer (Manufacturing Engineer of large electrical machinery). One year later, on February 23, 1964 he married Kuljit Kaur, daughter of Daulat Singh and Balwant Kaur of Hoshiarpur. He spent the following year in Leningrad, Soviet Union in an internship engineering program with BHEL. For almost a decade, he worked for BHEL in the city of Ranipur, Hardwar. During this time, his wife gave birth to his two children, Jyot and Prashant.
In 1973, he made the decision to immigrate to the United States in search of better opportunity. He was hired on site after his first interview with Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1974. He remained with Westinghouse (which later became Siemens) for his entire professional career. His always humble demeanor sometimes obscured how successful he was. During his career with Siemens he was awarded 4 patents, was a key contributor in the stator core design and manufacture of the Grand Cooley Dam and helped in the development of manufacturing technologies used by the US Naval nuclear fleet today. In addition, Gurdev helped develop equipment manufacturers in nearly 20 countries around the world.
In 1992, he made a difficult decision to leave his many friends in Pittsburgh and to move to Orlando after multiple attempts by his colleagues to recruit him to Florida. He continued to work for Westinghouse/Siemens and up through 2012 was working as a consultant for Siemens. Gurdev was always known for his professionalism, integrity, technical abilities and mentorship of young engineers.
In addition to his work, he was a passionate fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates & Penguins and Indian cricket. He enjoyed playing tennis, golf, gardening, palmistry and traveling. As he had been in Pittsburgh, Gurdev remained actively involved with the Gurdwara and the Sikh community at large.
His family remembers Gurdev for his kind heart, generosity, integrity and bravery.
