James Irwin Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary McCullough on Jan. 14, 2019.
James Ross Irwin, II was born on September 3, 1945, in San Antonio to Virginia Lee Pulliam Irwin and Paul Ross Irwin. He attended all grades and graduated from Alamo Heights Schools, attended San Antonio Junior College for two years, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Botany from the University of Texas at Austin. He enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and was selected to serve as an Airborne Reconnaissance Specialist in the Security Services as a Russian Linguist. After 4 years of service, he received an honorable discharge holding the rank of Staff Sergeant. He then joined his father in the family business, Audiphone Company of South Texas. He earned his Master's Degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1979. While in El Paso, he met his future wife, Pamela Lorraine Walters, whom he married at St. Matthews Catholic Church in El Paso, June 5, 1981. They made their home in Castle Hills and were blessed with two fine children of whom they are very proud, Emily Lorraine Irwin Rose and Andrew Ross Irwin. He is survived by his wife; children; grandson, Jaxon Rose; and his sister, Elizabeth "Libby" Cahalan. Jim was a Sunday School Teacher, Choir Member, Deacon, Ruling Elder, and Clerk of the Session for Alamo Heights Presbyterian Church. As a child, he was active in the Boy Scouts of America, first as a Cub and Boy Scout of Troop 53 at Alamo Heights Presbyterian Church, and as an adult, a Scout Leader and Den Leader of Troop 445 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. He was a guest lecturer at Our Lady of the Lake University and served as a director of the Texas Hearing Aid Association. He was semi-retired but continued to assist his clients in his home as well as at the San Antonio State Supported Living Center. Jim had a dry sense of humor, loved to tell stories and jokes, and read the obituaries daily, always commenting "I don't see my name in the obits, I guess I have to go to work". MEMORIAL SERVICE SATURDAY, JANUARY 19, 2019 11:00 A.M. ALAMO HEIGHTS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 6201 BROADWAY Rev. Dr. Richard Knott, Jr. will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to Alamo Heights Presbyterian Church.

My deepest condolences to the family of a great man. I first Mr. Irwin in the 80's, I was in my early twenties at the time. I have a severe hearing impairment. I was struggling to find a job because I could not use the phone very good. He help me get a Phonic Ear for the phone and it changed my whole life. I loved visiting with him. I loved listening to his stories. He was extremely helpful to me with the depression I had because of my hearing loss. Because of him I kept seeking farther and now I am proud to say I am a recipient of a Cochlear Implant all because of Mr. Irwin. He taught me to never give up. My implant has been a blessing. Just as Mr. Irwin always was a blessing to me. Thank you Mr. Irwin I will greatly miss you. But, I will still talk to you in my prayers.

My heartfelt condolences to the Irwin family. Jim made such a great contribution to the AHPC Choir, and I so enjoyed him being a part of the group while I was choir director. He always had a joke, a silly pun, and a smile. My prayers and thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.

Dear Pam, Emily and Andrew
I am so sorry for your loss. I for one will truly miss him! I will miss his out of nowhere phone calls and his funny jokes (Yes, they were dry sometime, but funny!) He was a hoot!!! He was practically like family to me ever since I started working with you Pam. If any of you ever need anything you know I am here always. I love y'all and you are all in my thoughts, heart and prayers. Heaven just received another angel...

Pam, I am sad and sorry for your loss of Jim which happened too soon. As a relative on his mother's side, I am grateful for the work he did to find history of the Pulliam family and share with the rest of us. His work down here may be done, but from all I know about him he has left a cherished legacy and he will be long remembered. Rest in peace, Jim Irwin.
