Joan R. Union, of Stoneham, formerly of Woburn, passed away on Friday evening, December 9. She was 86 years of age.
Born in Somerville and raised in Medford, she was the daughter of the late Robert, and the late Mabel Union. Joan was a graduate of Medford High School, and the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, and she attended Gordon College in Wenham.
Joan was member of the West Somerville Baptist Church, and later the First Baptist Church of Medford. She remained active in church work for most of her life, teaching Bible School, Sunday School, and singing in church choirs. She also worked as church Youth Director.
Joan volunteered with the Jolly Elders; and was also a volunteer and youth counsellor for Teen Challenge. Joan enjoyed spending summers in Ocean Park, Maine, where she had made many friends over the years.
Joan is survived by her sister, Lorna Stockbridge of Woburn; one niece, Lori Beth Blaisdell and her husband Phil of Pelham, NH; and two nephews, Robert Stockbridge and his wife Elizabeth of Woburn, and James Stockbridge and his wife Sarah of Hampstead, NH. She is also survived by seven great-nieces and nephews, Kaylin Pomerleau of Litchfield, NH, Krista and Corey Lanzillo of Pelham, NH, Alexa Kolbe of Pelham, NH, Sophia Stockbridge, of Woburn, and Peyton and Addison Stockbridge of Hampstead, NH; her great-great niece and great-great nephew, Makenzie and Chase Pomerleau; and several cousins and many friends.
Visiting hours will be at the Graham Funeral Home, 3 Arlington Rd., Woburn on Thursday evening December 15 from 4:00-7:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Medford, 29 Oakland St. in Medford on Friday, December 16 at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Arlington. Contributions in Joan's memory may be made to the Shriner's Hospitals, 2900 North Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607
