The education world lost a true hero this week when my friend and colleague, Joe Bergant, died. Joe had so many enduring qualities that defined his greatness. If you needed Joes help he always said yes. He was as cool and calm under pressure as anyone I have ever known. He genuinely loved everyone. I had the honor to hire Joe for his first administrative position and his last. He often called me "boss" with that sly smile he always displayed knowing the term never fit our relationship rather he was a treasured friend who always gave whatever he had without concern for what he would receive. His smile disarmed even the toughest of characters that often confront school leaders. He was smart, funny, dedicated and an honorable man. I will forever miss his presence in my life. I love you Joe.

Our Deepest Sympathy to you All. We had Mr. Joe Bergant II do our income taxes many many years ago. He did my aunt, uncle, my brothers, my parents and our's. This was back in the day when he was at Royalview Elementary. We had many a conversation since we were parents with young children. Trying to lead them in life with out the drugs, drinking and all the trials and tribulations of raising young children. He was always full of knowledge and discussions about children in today's world. God Bless you Mr. Bergant II you will be truly missed among all the people that you touched.

Thank you for all he did for all of us in Chardon! I will never forget how he came to me and other parents with tears in his eyes as we stood in line to get our children, apologizing for the shootings! He stayed strong giving whatever help we all needed to deal with this event! And I know he was deeply affected as well! I hope all of you, his family, know how much we appreciated him!

My saddened heart extends condolences to Wendy and the Bergant/Kellog families.
I met Joe as an instructor with my work at McKinley elementary and later, as a resident in Chardon. His warm smile, listening and sharing with laughter and encouragement whenever and wherever we "bumped into each other," are the type of good memories I have of him.
I am very sorry for your loss.

Heartfelt prayers go out to the Bergant family. Joe was a man that understood the importance of relationships and cared about people. He freely enjoyed sharing his family stories which promoted love and dedication. He respectively led Chardon Schools through traumatic times...He would frequently encouraged his administrative team to pay attention to the outside of their buildings and make sure things looked neat and clean....
His footprints will be remembered in Chardon.

I am so very, very sorry for your tremendous loss... As our children grew up in the Chardon schools, I always remember Joe with a smile and a kind word. My greatest memory of him is when all the kids from Chardon High walked back from the square, and into the school, after the tragedy that occurred there. Joe was there waiting for them outside the doors. The first child stopped as he reached out his hand and he leaned forward and gave that child a hug... After that, every single child that went back into that school received a hug from Joe Bergant before they entered the doors... all those kids knew that he cared! ... And so did all of the parents! I am thankful for his great example to so many! God bless you all in this time of sadness... I'm so very sorry

My deepest condolences to Wendy and Joe's extended family. We have lost a great man and my heart is broken for you all. Joe hired me as Assistant Principal at Chardon High School, my first administrative position. Joe was always available and his genuine care and concern were his trademark. He spoke often and lovingly of his family, and never missed an opportunity to inquire about my own children. It was always obvious just how much Joe adored his family. Joe was a great leader, mentor and friend, and I will cherish forever the laughs we shared together. What a beautiful soul! Rest in Peace, Joe.

God bless you, Joe. Wendy and family, you know best of all how deeply Joe touched the lives of so many. Joe ushered me in to my very first administrative position as a young educator and helped me understand the power of relationships and putting people first. Joe made me laugh and modeled the enjoyment and hard work in guiding children, supporting teachers, and welcoming families. Love you, Joe. Heaven knows a gem of a man and life has entered the gates!
