Dear Kelly Family,
Joe was one of the best teachers I have ever had. I majored in Religious Studies because of him and I have always used the story as an example of the powerful influence teachers can have. After RL 151 (Primitive Religious Thought) in the fall of 1975, I was sold. He was my advisor for three years, and I learned a great deal from him, which I remember to this day. I went on to different subject areas, but got the PhD he always advised and have had my own students for years. I have always remembered him as an example of an outstanding teacher. I hope that joyful memories of the time you shared will get you through this difficult time. May his soul and the souls of the faithfully departed rest in peace.

Dr. Kelly was an excellent Professor!!! He was one of the finest teachers I have ever know and was privileged to study with him. He was so interesting! I used to think to myself, "if I drop my pen, I'm gonna miss a whole page of notes!" He was so quick, so witty, so much fun and brought life to everything he taught. He was an honest grader and everyone who worked hard and studied well, did well. What a wonderful man! I'm so grateful that I had the opportunity to have him as my Professor!!! Thank you, Dr. Kelly.
