Lorraine Carol Breitzmann Holmes Urbaniak, 90, of Superior, died Friday, December 30, 2022, at Superior Rehab Center. She was born in Milwaukee, WI on April 2, 1932, the daughter of Herbert B. and Laura (Solberg) Breitzmann.
Lorraine was a 1949 graduate of Superior Central High School. She was employed as a legal secretary and later as a secretary for the School District of Superior for 22 years.
Lorraine was a lifelong learner, a talented self-taught artist, an avid reader, and lover of Shakespeare. She was a member of multiple book clubs, including those at Bethel Lutheran Church, New Perspectives, and the Superior Public Library. She loved the companionship and lively discussions that these groups provided. She was well-known for her murals, canvas paintings in oil and acrylic, and painted rocks, many of which grace her family's homes. She passed along her love of nature and the arts to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She knew the name of every native plant she encountered, maintained bountiful flower and vegetable gardens, and kept a well-stocked art cupboard for visitors. She also loved staying active and participated in snowshoe races, yoga, figure skating performances with her daughter, Karen, and travel to Italy and Mexico. Lorraine was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church for much of her life and had many friends in the church community. To know Lorraine was to love her. She had a magnetic personality, and her home was always bustling with an unannounced visitor or 10. She always had a block of cheddar cheese, crackers, and brandy on hand for her beloved guests. Every year her phone would ring off the hook with birthday well-wishes and she made sure to give each caller plenty of time to gab. She signed off by saying "glad we were able to solve all the world's problems." We will miss solving those problems with her.
Lorraine is survived by children, Peggy Nelson, Karen (Pat) Johnson, and Troy (Kari) Holmes, all of Superior, WI; Mary Kay "Suzee" (Joe) Farmer, Minnetonka, MN; Tad (Jill) Holmes, Madison, WI; grandchildren, Lans Roeber, Jessica (Steve) Arendas, Laina (Mike) Latterner, Shay Farmer, Cory (Nicole) Nelson, Kaylee Johnson, Cody (Jessica) Holmes, Chase Holmes, Shane (Hannah) Holmes and Leah (Nic) Halverson; great-grandchildren Caleb Roeber, Lily and Joey Latterner, Shoshanna and Braxton Arendas; sister, Julie Breitzmann and brothers, Roger (Sandy) Breitzmann and Alan (Shelly) Breitzmann, and caring nieces and nephews (Sandra, Terri, Shelley and Tony Breitzmann).
She is preceded in death by a son, Scott Holmes, brothers, Herbert Breitzmann Jr and Warner Breitzmann, and husbands, Richard Holmes, and Walter Urbaniak.
Services will be held at 2:30 PM on Friday, January 27, 2023, at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, 1209 E 5th Street, Superior, WI, with the Visitation from 1:00 PM-2:30 PM. Burial will be at Summit Cemetery.
