Michael Brian Shaw

Michael Brian Shaw, aged 71, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2025, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, the city of his birth. Born on August 5, 1953, in Virginia Beach, Michael was the cherished son of the late Commander Leslie Qwynn Shaw and Jeanne Richards Shaw. As a proud Navy brat, Michael experienced a life full of adventure, living in various places before ultimately settling back in Virginia Beach. An ardent lover of the ocean, it was in Hawaii that Michael, alongside his brother Les, discovered a passion for surfing that would shape much of his life. His joy for the waves was contagious, and he became an integral part of his brother's renowned surf shop, where he excelled as both a glasser and a charismatic salesman.
Aside from his love of surfing, Michael was a talented musician who enjoyed playing the guitar, drums, piano, violin, and ukulele. His appreciation for the outdoors extended to caring for neighborhood squirrels and cats, ensuring they always had food and shelter.
Affectionately known as Uncle Mike, he held his family and friends close to his heart, embodying the spirit of a true lion with a profound love for his pride.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy Shaw; his children, Rachel Lehman (Ronald) and Justin Shaw; his brother, Les Shaw (Joan); nieces and nephews Heather Shaw, LG Shaw, and Carley Shaw; grandchildren, Cedar Untalan, Alexis Lehman, Levi Lehman, Maddox Shaw, and Madison Shaw; three great-grandchildren, and two great-nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his beloved parents.
A memorial paddle-out will be scheduled for sometime in June, providing an opportunity for family and friends to celebrate Michael's life and legacy. Details will follow later.
Michael Brian Shaw will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him. His spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him and in the rolling waves that brought him such joy.
