Misak Tatosian Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 13, 2015.
PORTLAND – Misak "Mike" Tatosian Jr., 87, of Abbott Street in Lewiston, passed away peacefully at Maine Medical Center on Feb. 11 with his loving family at his side following a brief illness. Born in Providence, RI on July 7, 1927, as a son of Misak and Bazar Tatosian, he attended local schools in Chelsea, MA and enlisted in the US Navy in 1945 just after graduating high school. In World War II, Mike served in an amphibious unit operating small landing craft where he picked up Franklin Delano Roosevelt Jr., the president's son, and took him to the USS Missouri for the signing at the end of the war. A combat veteran of the Vietnam War, Mike proudly served in the "Brown Water Navy" tirelessly ferrying ammunition along the Perfume River to the Marines at Hue. He would later return to Vietnam for a second tour of duty as an adviser to the South Vietnamese Navy. Mike retired from the US Navy as a Senior Chief Boatswain's Mate in 1987 after serving his country for over 30 total years. He embraced many cultures during his tours in the Pacific, making many friends and learning to speak Mandarin Chinese, Vietnamese, and a bit of Korean. During his retired years, Mike enjoyed continued service to his local community as a member of the Kora Temple Shriners, 25 year member of Rabboni Lodge #0150, VFW Post, and the American Legion. He loved collecting classic cars (usually one at a time), getting coffee with other Veterans, and attending as many Boston College hockey and football games as possible. Mike is survived by his wife of 34 years, Shu Tuan, whom he married on April 1, 1980 in Taiwan; a son, Michael, and his wife, Jeana of CA; a granddaughter, Jane, and a grandson soon to be born. He was predeceased by his brother, George. The family thanks the devoted staff of the CICU at Maine Medical Center for their empathy and professionalism. This Man was a mentor and leader of men. Although he stood about 5'3", he walked the earth as an NFL Linebacker. God has given me the honor to have known Mike.

Dear Mrs. Tatosian and Michael,
I worked with your husband and father while we were stationed at Officer's Candidate School in Newport. He was a wonderful man and a true gentleman.
While swimming at Bates college one morning after he retired, he pulled my Uncle, Alan Colley, from the pool and worked to revive my Uncle after he sustained a fatal heart attack.
I am sorry I did not know of Mike's passing until just today. Please know how sorry I am for your loss. He was a great man.
Sincerely, Alan Eschbach

I met Mike at the Lewiston Veterans Center, and I can say that he was the friendliest and most compassionate guy there----I wondered how he knew I needed that just at that time. But that was Mike...What a smile ALWAYS, and willingness to listen to his fellow veterans. We had a shared love of antique cars, and he loved that Caddy. I just loved looking at him drive it with that infectious smile. May God hold you in his arms as you reach the other shore---For the family, please know that Mike was and is LOVED for the man and patriot that he IS.

I would like to send my condolences and share a little of how I came to. Know Sr Chief Mike. We served together at Brunswick NAS attached to SERE school. He was Chief T and I was the just out of boot camp cook. He took myself and other young sailors under his wing and guided us along the way,he was an early mentor in fact he helped ready myself for my trip out west to searve aboard the USS Fife which upon arriving there found him to be serving on the ship next to me if I. Remember right and I had a memorable Sunday lunch with him and wife and a very young Mike as well. I enjoyed my time knowing him . he truly was a great man.C
