Nolan Jack Campbell, born September 12, 2023, shared his light and love with all who knew him in his almost 9 months of life before passing peacefully on June 11, 2024. He is survived by his mother, Meredith Campbell, father, Joshua Campbell, older sister, Mia Joy Campbell, and
older brother Aiden Campbell. He also left behind an army of loving family, supportive friends, and kind caregivers.
Our little champ faced countless obstacles as he battled Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. He spent the first 6 weeks of life at Primary Children's Hospital in
Salt Lake City, UT. He had his first open heart surgery, the Norwood-Sano procedure, at 3 days old. From the beginning, Nolan showed everyone his strength and quiet courage.
Through his next few months of life, he had a couple of hospital stays for respiratory support when fighting an illness, and then for a heart catheterization procedure to put a stent in his heart's Sano shunt. His family was so grateful that he was able to be home through Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.
On January 7th, 2024, Nolan was taken to the Utah Valley Hospital Emergency Room for respiratory distress. He tested positive for RSV, and because of his increased need for respiratory support, along with his precarious health given his heart condition, he was transferred via ambulance to Primary Children's Hospital. Thus began a rollercoaster like no other for Nolan. He overcame RSV and was cleared for his next open-heart surgery, the Glenn procedure. He had a code blue after his Pre-Glenn heart catheterization, and was intubated until his heart surgery. Recovery was a slow process for Nolan, but he let everyone know that he was the one in charge.
Nolan faced many complications during his recovery, including pleural effusions, chylothorax, and a medium-large stroke. In addition, he had 3 more heart catheterization procedures, 1 abdominal surgery, and many interventional radiology procedures and scans. Nolan, being the
champ that he was, faced it all with unmatched strength and the biggest smiles and giggles. Just as Nolan conquered one mountain, another seemed to be just ahead, as he struggled against pulmonary hypertension. He was approved and listed for heart transplant on May 8th, 2024. While his family held onto hope, Nolan continued to have health challenges, including bacterial pneumonia and necrotizing enterocolitis. It became clear on June 11, 2024, that Nolan wasn't going to live for much longer. Extensive interventions were only taxing his body even more and were not proving effective. They made the impossible decision with all the love in the world to withdraw his life support. He passed away peacefully in his parent's arms at 7:50pm that evening.
To know Nolan was to love him. His caregivers at the hospital became his second family, as he spent 7 of his 9 months inpatient. His brilliant light has changed the world for good. May we love more fully, live more bravely, and try to keep smiling, just like Nolan.
Nolan's funeral service will be held Monday, June 17th at 6:00pm at 1785 E 400 S Springville, UT, 84663. Interment will be at Springville City Cemetery on June 18th, 2024.
