Dr. Norman Shapiro, 94, of Memphis, Tennessee passed away on Friday, September 14, 2012 at the Baptist Trinity Hospice House in Collierville after a short illness. Norman graduated from Humes High School in 1934 at the age of 16, then attended Southwestern College and graduated in 1938. In 1949, he earned his Doctorate in Medicine from The University of Tennessee College of Medicine. He was a pioneer in anesthesiology and practiced for more than 30 years at Baptist Memorial Hospital in downtown Memphis. During his career he served as anesthesiologist during 34,916 surgeries. He served in both World War II and the Korean War. Norman was a gentle, gifted man who spent a lifetime expressing his love and passion for learning, literature, the theater and fine arts. For the last two decades he continued his personal education at the Meeman Center for Lifelong Learning at Rhodes College and his religious studies at Temple Israel, where he was a member for over 50 years, as well as a volunteer and mentor to many. Dr. Norman Shapiro was preceded in death by his wife, Rhoda H. Shapiro. He was a loving and proud father and survived by: A daughter, Dr. Trudy Shapiro Dunlap, her husband Dr. Alex Dunlap and grandchildren Hannah and Will of West Memphis, Arkansas. Son, Dr. David Shapiro and his wife Rhonda of Birmingham, Alabama and granddaughter Rachael Shapiro Majka of Chicago and grandson Daniel Shapiro of Denver. Son, Phillip Shapiro and his wife Debbi of Atlanta, Georgia and grandson Sam Shapiro, a student at Washington University in St. Louis. His loving companion, Gloria Gang of Germantown. Services will be at 2:00 pm Tuesday, September 18, at Temple Israel Cemetery-Levy-Cooper Chapel. In an effort to continue Dr. Shapiro's legacy of learning, the family wishes all considerations for memorials be to Rhodes College or Temple Israel.
