Richard Raymond Silvis

Richard Raymond Silvis, October 2, 1936-July 19, 2023 Myrtle Beach, SC. Richard Raymond Silvis passed
away peacefully in his sleep July 19, 2023.
Richard (Dick), was born October 2, 1936 in Kittanning, PA, the son of Raymond and Carolyn Silvis.
He was a Graduate of Kittanning High School 1954-proud member of Kittanning Fireman's Band.
Richard served 3 years in the Army Security Agency in Kenai, Alaska 1956-1958. While stationed in
Alaska, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the entire wilderness experience taking on the nick name,
"Sourdough"! With his free time in Alaska, he and his other Army friends helped build an addition on
Kenai Bible Chapel. He was a graduate of California State College, California, PA. After graduation,
Richard accepted an Industrial Arts teaching position at Meadville Area Junior High School, Meadville,
PA. 1961-1967.
Richard continued his education at Edinboro University, Edinboro PA.
Richard accepted a position as a mechanical engineer at Talon, Inc., Meadville, PA 1967-1982.
Richard accepted a Mechanical Engineer position at AVX, Olean, NY in 1982 and was transferred to AVX
in Myrtle Beach, SC 1983. He retired from AVX in 1996.
Richard enjoyed a full retirement of fishing, camping, family, and friends. He was an active member of
Socastee United Methodist Church. His family and friends thought he could fix anything. He was a very
handy man and loved teaching his skills to his children and friends! He was always a teacher!
Richard is survived by his wife Joyce of 63 years, 2 sons, Thomas Richard Silvis, Paul Raymond
Silvis(Kathleen), both from Myrtle Beach, SC, Daughter Deborah Silvis Chapman(Chris) Florence, SC,
Granddaughter Morgan Chapman, Winnsboro, SC, Step Grandson's Ben and Steven Chapman, PA.,
Sister Nancy Wiltrout(John) Meadville, PA., and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Funeral Service will be held on July 29, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Socastee United Methodist Church, 5575 Dick
Pond Road, Myrtle Beach, SC 29588. The family will receive family and friends at the church between
1:30-2:00 p.m. before the service begins at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Socastee United Methodist Church, P.O. Box
30787, Myrtle Beach, SC 29588
Remains will be laid to rest in Rural Valley Cemetery, Rural Valley, PA at a later date.
